As early as 1954, Davis reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). Kind of Blue was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Davis providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, Kind of Blue precipitated a major stylistic development: modal jazz. Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the '50s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But Kind of Blue was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions -- Davis' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touch of pianist Bill Evans, the electrifying presence of John Coltrane, and Cannonball Adderley --that some 50-plus years after its initial release, Kind of Blue is still recognized as Davis' point of departure toward jazz's less-explored regions. Bill Evans' translucent chords and Paul Chambers' famous bassline herald the revolution that is "So What": Davis and Evans' taut, coiled lyricism stands in sharp relief to the saxophonists' labyrinthine elation. The fat, shimmering beat of the classic Evans/Chambers/Jimmy Cobb rhythm team is an oasis of calm throughout the childish blues of "Freddie Freeloader." Often credited to Davis, "Blue in Green" is an Evans masterpiece, in which the rhythmic oasis becomes a smoky mirage for Davis' minor reveries on muted horn. The waltzing "All Blues" is one of the smoothest, most swinging grooves in the history of jazz, while "Flamenco Sketches" reflects Davis' fascination with the earthy melodies and brooding metaphors of the Iberian peninsula; a harbinger of his next masterpiece, Sketches of Spain. Kind of Blue remains Miles Davis' most evocative piece of musical haiku.

Editorial Reviews
[T]he music draws you in with seductively gentle restraint. It's a recording with a pristine elegance.

4.5 stars out of 5 -- Its ageless cool now seems intertwined with its backstory: Just months after making the album, Davis and most of his sidemen would spin off in different directions, founding entire schools of jazz.

...The absolutely beautiful Coltrane solo on the `Flamenco Sketches' alternate is alone worth the price....The restoration of the sound to the correct pitch makes enough of a difference to recommend repurchasing this classic even without the jazz track of the year aboard...
JazzTimes (19970801)

This is a remarkable album. Using very simple but effective devices, Miles has constructed an album of extreme beauty and sensitivity. This is not to say that this LP is a simple one--far from it. What is remarkable is that the men have done so much with the stark, skeltal material.

This music changed everything for me.

Created: 25/02/10
13 years ago i was sifting through a used cd bin at a local trade in store, i stumbled upon this cd, Of course i had heard of Miles Davis, but the vision in my mind was of an older, tired looking man, i even remembered his appearance on a miami vice episode. At the time i didnt care or even know anything about jazz, other than the dixie land and pre war swing my grandfather used to listen too. in fact i remember him saying " no jazz after ww2 is even worth listening to", as far as i was concerned,no jazz was worth listening to, i was into heavy metal, the harder the better, wich may have sodten my ears a bit to some of the free jazz ive grown to love, like peter brotzmann and coltrane's later period. later as got into my mid 20's ,i began discovering authentic blues artists like muddy waters and howlin wolf and more obscure artists like johnny shines and jb hutto. wich i believe also helped me walk through the door that kind of blue opened up for me. as i walked out of that used cd store , i had no idea how my life would change.ill never forget those first few seconds of paul chambers bass and bill evan's piano setting the mood of the record on so what. hearing the vulnerability in miles's horn just captivated me. the album sounded so modern and relevant.i remember how blue in green had this desolate lonely beauty ,and the cool strut of all blues just seemed so joyous. not to many albums live up to their hype, but i can honestly say , i have no problem calling this the greatest jazz album of all time, maybe the greatest of any music.looking back 13 years later i have nearly every davis cd, lp. and 8 track and all the books about this man, then of course i went on to discover the electric period of miles, coming from a rock background, i was so blown away by bitches brew and what came after, ultimately being surprised at all the negative reviews by jazz purists to that period, wondering why should i limit myself to one style of music, and why should miles? im glad he didnt.for me kind of blue opened the door, i still go back to it, and it still sound fresh with each listen.

A Classic

Created: 05/02/07
This is considered by many as part of the basic jazz repertoire. The liner notes say this group did not rehearse before recording. Miles went over what he wanted to accomplish, then they rolled the tape and started to play. Amazing. If you like small combo jazz, you'll like this. Lots of Miles Davis' play with a stright mute throughout, for that familiar, bright, muted trumpet sound he's known for. With guys like Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane, this album couldn't miss. Great classic small combo jazz.

Kind of Miles

Created: 17/03/09
A definitive sign of the times is Miles' Kind of Blue. He once said that he was all about the blues and spent the remainder of his life after this masterpiece pursuing just that although his efforts to expand on his own musical expression took on many forms he always was about the blues. Possibly the most renown innovator in the history of jazz, demonstrating to the music world that music, especially jazz is first and foremost about exploration and movement and Miles never stayed long in one place. His efforts on this particular recording date once again demonstrates the artist's ability as a leader to captivate the listener and inspire his band to go in a different direction and change the landscape of tonal expression by giving the players the freedom to create on their own. He would continue seeking out new voices and spreading freedom of expression to all that followed those here. The ability to acquire and evaluate new talent in order to achieve fresh and deliberate new directions in music is present here and will always be what we remember about Miles

Best album ever: "Kind of Blue"

Created: 12/08/06
Even if you’ve never “gotten” Jazz before, you’ll be a fan after hearing Miles Davis’ masterpiece, “Kind of Blue.” No music collection is complete without “Kind of Blue,” whether this is your only Jazz album, or whether you have a library. “Kind of Blue” is an incredible musical journey, all the more remarkable since it was recorded on the first take without any prior rehearsing – it just couldn’t be improved. This also means it maintains the sense of spontaneity that is essential to Jazz and that is notably missing from many other Jazz recordings. “Kind of Blue” will appeal to any listener. Since first hearing it, it has never been off our CD player, and in fact, we have several copies of it around, and my two children have had their own in their rooms and have listened to it nightly since they were born. I never tire of listening to this album. Words are inadequate to describe “Kind of Blue,” it must be heard, and I recommend it to anyone. The world would be a much better place if everyone listened to this beautiful music.
