    Movie synopsis

One of the first films to explore the insanity of war, this 1967 French farce drew a literal connection between the clinically insane and the hawkish mentality of war. The message of director Phillipe de Broca's masterpiece resonated with its Vietnam-era audience and was proclaimed one of the most powerful political statements of the sixties art house scene. KING OF HEARTS takes place at the end of World War I in the French village of Marville. Discovering that a German explosive has been set within its environs, British troops send one of their own, Private Charles Plumpick (Alan Bates), on a reconnaissance mission into the town. There he discovers that the only remaining inhabitants are the patients in a mental hospital who promptly dub Plumpick their lost king. As he tries to lead them out of danger, they take over the town in an exuberant celebration. Despite its strong antiwar stance, KING OF HEARTS is a sweetly comedic work. This is primarily evident in the innocent romance between the bewildered Plumpick and the tender mental patient Coquelicot, played by a radiantly youthful Genevieve Bujold.

Hilarious French comedy - a MUST see!

    Created: 20/02/10
The only time I saw this movie was in college. My friend would occasionally host foreign film nights in the music building and this was one that he chose to show. The movie is hilarious! During the war, a town gets destroyed by bombs and tanks--all except for the mental institution. The enemies left the town for dead, believing that they had completely demolished everyone and everything. The people in the mental institution are able to escape and they reinhabit the town, each character taking on a business or trade. When the enemies return, they are confused and the stories that unfold are truly entertaining and fun. I have tried tracking down this movie for years, but no video stores I've been to have ever had it to rent or buy. I found it on Netflix, but really wanted an original DVD copy for myself and finally got it on eBay. I couldn't believe how much they were selling for until I realized it was out of print. If you can find this movie--BUY IT! And don't ever sell it again. Not only is it worth a lot of money, but it is one of the best films you'll ever see!

    King of Hearts, DVD

This was an excellent movie. But, unless you like reading sub-titles, don't buy this DVD.

I own a old VHS copy of the KING OF HEARTS. The audio track is in English. For some unknown reason, the DVD has a French audio sound track. And, only a French audio sound track.

I saw the movie many years ago and the sound track was in English. Several months ago, the movie was on PBS, IN ENGLISH. The VHS is in English. So, why did the studio release the DVD in French?

To make matters worse, most sellers us an old discription which says there are sound tracks in both French and English. My seller was great. He allowed me to return it for a full refund. But, he has not changed the listing's discription.

If the studio comes out with a revised version which includes an English sound track, then this is a must have DVD. It's a classic, timeless, anti-war movie. It is as enjoyable today as it was 40 years ago. Until then, find a good VHS copy.

KING OF HEARTS - SOCIAL SATIRE

    Created: 01/11/05
Alan Bates plays a soldier who can't face the horror and stupidity of war. He leaves the front lines and wanders into a town that has been evacuated - all except for the inmates of the local mental institution.
They find themselves freed and take over the town. Through his interaction with the crazies, Alan Bates finds a very unique way of dealing with the authorities when he returns to the front lines. This story is a classic commentary on the absurdity of war and "civilization" in general. Exactly who is crazy and who is not?????

A classic cult film on the absurdity of war. Even if you don't like subtitled films, the story logically unfolds in a way that transcends any language barrier. And isn't that why we go to war, because of a failure to understand one another?

    The Perfect Classic Film

    Created: 10/05/08
This classic film is seemingly timeless in it's humor. Though it is a dated subject matter, you'll find a lot of fun with everything about it.
Alan Bates is amazing & his co-stars all are perfect in thir roles.

Don't mind the brief nude shots of Alan's backside. It all adds to the light hearted humor. I saw this film in the late 70's & fell in love with it, & hoped to find it on DVD. Well, now I have & I adore it, as you will too.
