    Movie synopsis

One of the first films to explore the insanity of war, this 1967 French farce drew a literal connection between the clinically insane and the hawkish mentality of war. The message of director Phillipe de Broca's masterpiece resonated with its Vietnam-era audience and was proclaimed one of the most powerful political statements of the sixties art house scene. KING OF HEARTS takes place at the end of World War I in the French village of Marville. Discovering that a German explosive has been set within its environs, British troops send one of their own, Private Charles Plumpick (Alan Bates), on a reconnaissance mission into the town. There he discovers that the only remaining inhabitants are the patients in a mental hospital who promptly dub Plumpick their lost king. As he tries to lead them out of danger, they take over the town in an exuberant celebration. Despite its strong antiwar stance, KING OF HEARTS is a sweetly comedic work. This is primarily evident in the innocent romance between the bewildered Plumpick and the tender mental patient Coquelicot, played by a radiantly youthful Genevieve Bujold.

Still one of the best movies

    Created: 21/03/10
This is a comedy which questions the sanity of WWI, or more exactly, the sanity of the leaders. A British soldier finds himself alone in an area contested by the two sides and takes refuge in a town of sympathetic French folk, thinking that when the Germans clear out and the British come through, he will rejoin his unit.

So as not to spoil the story, I won't tell you what happens next, but in a very funny way the story leads you to question exactly who are the insane ones in this scenario.

A true classic with a considerable following even today, this movie continues to show in theaters, and still draws the audience. It'll draw you in, just as it does the main character.

    VHS Version better than DVD

    Created: 19/06/09
The "King-Of-Hearts" is a classic anti-war movie. Other reviews describe the plot. I want to tell you why to grab a VHS version.

The VHS version is the same version shown in movie theaters. The sound track is in ENGLISH. Several years after the VHS version was marketed, A DVD version was released. The official/standard DVD description says the DVD includes an English sound track. THE DVD VERSION HAS NO ENGLISH SOUND TRACK. The DVD has a French sound track, and optional English sub-titles.

You may be willing to read sub-titles. But, most will enjoy the VHS version more. I ofter show the VHS version to students. For durability, and reliability, I made a DVD back-up from my VHS tape.

The bottom line: Avoid the DVD version.

    A must see!!!!!!!

    Created: 10/05/09
This movie is not an easy one to find, but if you do it is a must see for those who enjoy comedy. This is a side splitting movie from beginning to end.
