Movie synopsis

Despite his origins as a low-budget filmmaker with a taste for the unsavory side of life, Peter Jackson has turned into an "event" filmmaker--someone who can conjure up a movie on a scale unlike anything we've seen before. KING KONG is his sprawling, epic remake of Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack's 1933 movie of the same name, and it is as big as the gorilla that runs riot through Jackson's rendering of Depression-era New York. Keeping the simple yet effective plot intact--a film crew travels to the mysterious Skull Island, picks up Kong, and brings him back to New York City--Jackson expands on this basic premise by drawing on the jaw-dropping talents of his special effects team to satisfy his thirst for the grand spectacle. The movie posits Naomi Watts as Ann Darrow, the starry-eyed blonde beauty whom Kong falls for; Jack Black as Carl Denham, a low-rent Orson Welles look-alike who drags the crew to the island to make his movie; and Adrian Brody as Jack Driscoll, a hack playwright who battles Kong both physically and for Darrow's heart. As the men struggle against Kong and the lumbering dinosaurs of Skull Island, Andy Serkis, who made the character of Gollum so believable in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, steps in to form the facial features of the mighty gorilla, lending a real emotional sucker-punch to the scenes between Darrow and Kong. But it's the final third of the movie where Jackson really delivers; his 1930s New York is stunning, and when Kong breaks free from his shackles and stampedes on a lovelorn trek through the city, then iconically climbs the Empire State Building with his sweetheart, it's impossible to not be swept away by the sheer beauty and sadness of the moment. While its three-hour length may prove daunting to some, the payoff in Jackson's KING KONG is ultimately worth it, proving once again that he is a director of breathtaking vision., IN THEATRES: DECEMBER 15, 2005From Peter Jackson (THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE MOTION PICTURE TRILOGY), this classic thriller about a giant ape that terrorizes New York City gets a high-tech remake promising plenty of awesome special effects. Naomi Watts, Adrian Brody, and Jack Black are in the starring lineup.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"Jackson worked fresh magic at his Weta studios in his native New Zealand, where he had Kong do battle with prehistoric predators on Skull Island..."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (09/08/2005)

"[T]he movie seals Jackson's reputation: He's the most gifted big-picture artist working today....What resonates is the story, which is a very human tale of compassion, greed, loss, bravery, creativity, foolishness, and love." -- Grade: A
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (10/16/2005)

"[Jackson] succeeds through a combination of modesty and reckless glee, topping himself at every turn and reveling in his own showmanship."
New York Times - A. O. Scott (12/14/2005)

"Jackson is a visionary filmmaker who is not only a technical wizard but also a master storyteller."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (12/13/2005)

"[A] witty comment on the darkness at the heart of adventure stories, a bazillion-dollar spectacle that reserves the right to question the morality of spectacles, and, mostly, a tender love story about a melancholy girl and her tragically misunderstood monkey."
Los Angeles Times - Carina Chocano (12/12/2005)

Good remake with beautiful visuals!!!!!

Created: 08/07/06
This is a very entertaining and engrossing remake of the famous King Kong story. There are great special effects and Naomi Watts is wonderful in it. I think it's definately her best work. It's a fun movie but by no means perfect. It starts off a little slow until you see Kong. There is no on-screen chemistry between Naomi Watts and Adrien Brody. She has lots of chemistry with Kong though. Jack Black is an odd choice to play the obsessed filmmaker Carl. He comes across kind of shifty, annoying, and not quite right for the part. He's not very believable. Overall, I was surprised to be moved by this film. You feel sympathy for King Kong, an animal that does not seem to fit in anywhere. He doesn't fit in on Skull Island or with people in New York. This movie is kind of a tear jerker but worth watching at least once.

King Kong

Who doesn't like King Kong. whether it be the original 1930's, the 1970's remake, or the new 2006 release, it is the timeless story of beauty and the beast, and each version out performs the others with the advancement of special effects. I believe there is also a silent version, but I have never seen it, and dislike reading subtitles. But the main reason I bought the DVD, is my 4 year old grandson. This is the second DVD I bought, because he wore out the first one, or should I say, he scratched it from putting it in and out of the DVD player so often. He just loves the movie, although he always has me start it where the movie crew sneaks off the ship onto Skull Island, but his favorite part is when King Kong beats up the T-Rex's. I guess the performances and action before those scenes of the movie are just ho-hum to a 4 year old. I reccommend, that if you are going let a 4 year old watch it, to watch it with them and explain how cool that part is, and wow! I guess King Kong is a good guy saving the girls life, and of coarse, pretend play that you are the T-Rex and they are King Kong while they wrestle on the floor with you. I try, but he never lets me be King Kong because he wants to be the good guy!

Take Care, Tony

king kong 2006

it was a romantic and loving movie. yes, there was death & other horror but there was tenderness between her & king kong. i also saw the first king kong with fay ray when i was a very little girl, and it made me cry that king kong fell off the building and he loved her. Denim, the creator, of the director in the movie was very good, especially at the end, when he said "Beauty killed the beast" and everyone surrounding him oohed and ahed which made it very special that he died for love for her.

the bad comment i have to say about this king kong is when Denim said the same words that beauty killed the beast and no one commented as the old king kong - i must say that it was very necessary for the reaction of the people surrounding the dead ape and there wasn't any - it left the ending very flat.

i never thought i would purchse any other king kong movie since the very first one but this picture really got to me...i loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sadden by the ending of Kong.

I watch King Kong feeling very up beat about seeing this old movie epic as a new "remade"movie epic. There is so much to see and hear, you'll never believe what was added to this remade movie epic. Watch the movie maker and ships captain check out the island, be prepared for great heart pounding action , wait for the first site on KING KONG! The Movie is fast pace and action packed after about 40 mins in this three hour movie. Keep your eye's on the island, things get pretty hairy. The actress Naomi Watts will have wanting to save King Kong in no time, she is a good actress. As I watched I began to figure out the ending, I hate knowing what is going to happen.I was Hoping that it wasn't going to end in the way it did , but more so I wanted a new ending for a change, something to remember. After the scene in the city I felt the movies bottomed out, it seem to drag to the sad but sluggish ending. Nothing new at the ending but the way the giant used his strength to climb tall building was amazing, but the ending made me cry, it made me feel angry and sad not at all good. I just wish they had done the ending alot different. Enjoy this movie it's has many good parts worth the three hours.

Beauty and the Beast!!!

Created: 13/10/06
People have been waiting to see what would become of King Kong ever since Godzilla got his remake awhile back. "King Kong" takes a much different direction by setting the whole thing in the 1930s. But the feel is fantastic and it is all seems much more adventurous. Special effects are amazing and it is almost just as much dinosaurs and giant bugs as it is Kong. The whole trip is actually a very sad love story when its all over. The cast does a great job but the real star is Kong and you will find yourself rooting for the big ape up until the end. This is a must see movie so you have to check it out. 4/5
