The Kingdom (DVD, 2007, Widescreen)

Movie synopsis

Actor, writer, and director Peter Berg (FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS) delivers a fearless, action-packed political thriller with THE KINGDOM. Shot in the Middle East with unsettling immediacy, the hand-held cameras put viewers right inside the action, while the tension between American FBI agents and their Saudi counterparts maintains an interesting uncertainty about who's "right" and who's "wrong." The bad guys, however, are unmistakable: the film opens with a brutal terrorist attack on an oil company compound in Saudi Arabia, where a visiting FBI agent is killed. Back home in Washington, fellow agents Ronald Fleury (Jamie Foxx, RAY) and Janet Mayes (Jennifer Garner, ALIAS), want revenge, and will do whatever it takes to gain access to the investigation. Fleury all but blackmails a Saudi prince to get clearance against the wishes of a timorous attorney general, and flies overnight to the scene of the crime. Accompanying him are the no-nonsense forensics expert Mayes, Southern-fried bomb authority Grant Sykes (Chris Cooper, ADAPTATION), and Jewish smart aleck Adam Leavitt (Jason Bateman, ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT). Once there, they encounter the resistance of a Saudi government more interested in getting the Americans safely out of the country and avoiding conflict, rather than in solving the crime. They are assigned a smarmy handler with a weak stomach (Jeremy Piven, ENTOURAGE) to make sure they stay out of trouble. The team must navigate a maze of bureaucracy to begin collecting evidence, but they have an unlikely ally in their Saudi escort, Colonel Faris Al Ghazi (Ashraf Barhom, PARADISE NOW), a scrupulous and intelligent officer whom Fleury befriends. Soon enough, procedure and protocol give way to car chases and explosive fire fights, and the current bleak political climate of extremism and violence is portrayed in a stark light with no easy answers.

A Taut Political Thriller

Created: 01/01/08
"The Kingdom" was likely one of the best (not to mention highest grossing) Middle East war movies of 2007. While others like "In the Valley of Elah" and "Valley of the Heart" focused on the after effects of war in America, "The Kingdom" takes viewers into the thick of the action following a terrorist attack in Saudi Arabia.

Peter Berg crafts a taut political thriller that gives equal time to both the American and Saudi side of the story: the ideas of motivation and family are explored on both sides of the line. Similarly, the climax, in which one FBI agents is kidnapped by terrorists, plays like the crackling chase in "Children of Men."

Still, there are elements that keep "The Kingdom" from being a complete success. Jason Bateman as Agent Adam Leavitt is completely unsympathetic, while Jennifer Garner is completely unbelievable as a forensic expert who flinches every time the attack is replayed on film, but has no problem exhuming the victims' bodies.

For its faults, though, "The Kingdom" still plays like a live wire: sucking viewers in with a promise of action, while subtly hinting as larger sociopolitical issues.

Great movie

Jamie Fox gives a pretty good performance as well as Jennifer Garner and Chris Cooper. The story and script is great, and the action is gripping. It's about a couple of attacks in Saudi Arabia in which a couple agents end up dead, so an FBI team of four is sent to investigate the scene and run into trouble. good directing and good performances along with a good story make for an enjoyable experience.

Solid movie, balance of action and geopolitical lessons

Created: 06/01/08
During the beginning credits, we learn the entire US-Saudi history. I learned quite a bit from the timeline. This was a fast-paced, smart, action film sprinkled with geopolitical lessons throughout. This is what Syriana should have been. If you like the pace of the Bourne trilogy, you'll enjoy this film. The cast is exceptional, but the Justin Bateman character was a little over the top and annoying. Good thing he didn't have too many scenes. Jamie Foxx didn't play the team leader as too tough and brash. Jennifer Garner definitely used her training from Alias and was great. The special features was packed. I found the behind the scenes of the military training the cast received was humorous. The picture quality and sound of the DVD was great, especially during the final battle scenes. I'd definitely add this to my collection.

The Kingdom is explosive entertainment !!!

Created: 17/09/09
Peter Berg is brilliant in directing an excellent cast lead by Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner and Chris Cooper in this amazing look inside American and Saudi relationships after 9/11. With events that closely follow actual events that have followed in a post 9/11 world, the movie actually shapes up to be one of friendship and mutual respect for two agents trying to find the truth in a very guarded intelligence matter of state.

MIDDLE EAST

Created: 04/03/08
This was a very interesting movie. Great acting and a great plot.

Set in Saudi Arabia, the difference between our countries is outlined in stark contrast. To see people that will kill for a religion is very scary. The way even very young children look at you in dislike? or hatred? with a total aversion to your way of life, is such a striking difference when you compare the two cultures.

The suicide bomber in an American playground, is bad enough. But this was just a prelude to blow up a large bomb, after the medics and emergency workers came to aid the hurt and dying.

The investigation that follows is hampered by their way of life.

Worth watching just to see the differences in ways of life.
thanks
