I wanted a prime, "standard" 50mm, although on APS-C it becomes 75mm. Tried this, and I'm happy of the choice. Perfect for portraits, surely faster than the supplied SAM lens. A really nice little gem, despite its years. You might not find a good one at the first try, watch out for scratches and fungus alike. The integrated hood is good for a laugh, not much else. Overall my favourite lens, compact and fast, and certainly not louder than the standard SAM 18-55 dt. Works like a charm on APS-C and FF, and complements nicely the new slt compact bodies. Is it better than the sony 50/1.8? I wouldn't know, have this and don't feel the need for that one. This minolta is much cheaper, built better, and is a FF lens. The coating is that of the minolta of the era, superb colours but might suffer CA. If you find a good one, you won't need anything else, until you want something better, faster or whatever. Which I'm not certain you'd find, and surely not for this kind of money!

I purchased this lens to use on my Sony A330. It is a great alternative to the expensive Sony lenses or APS specific lenses. The focal length is great for portraits as well as tons of other situations. The aperture allows for great indoor photos at reasonably low light levels.

This is a great fast lens for the money. I have no problems using it on the Sony a-33 and A-500. Two very different camera systems. Sony SLT's are notoriously bad at accepting aftermarket lenses, but this one being a Minolta has no problems at all. It's 1.7 F range is fantastic and gives some of the clearest photos I've ever taken. The only thing i dont like is that the focus ring is almost unuseablely thin, and makes for very difficult manual focusing when you want to ditch the AF. but this is rare and not that much to deal with. A great buy for anyone using Sony/Minolta cameras. In fact I might say a "MUST" have to be honest.

Minolta AF 50mm f/1.4 Lens

Created: 08/02/10
An ultra-bright standard lens that reproduces perspective that generally looks "natural" to a human observer under normal viewing conditions.
This lens provides excellent clarity and visual accuracy even with fully open aperture when working indoors or in low-light and twilight conditions.
Best for indoors portraits.
