The Kovels' New Dictionary of Marks/Pottery and Porcela

Very comprehensive guide to pottery and porcelain marks. Invaluable for the Seller who is just starting out and is unfamiliar with marks. Marks easy to find with this guide that sorts marks by the shape or graphic images used in marks. I find the Foreign Marks particularly helpful, especially when buying porcelain and pottery from such countries as Russia and Eastern European countries. Many foreign alphabets. Also information very helpful regarding dating systems and how to spot fakes and forgeries. The Kovels do it right one more time. Highly recommended book.Make sure you add this book to your pottery and porcelain library.

Helpful for the novice, and the expert!

The Kovels' New Dictionary

I love this little book to take along with me on my "hunting trips." I love to go antiquing and it has been great to have this ride along with me. I call it the Identifiable Bible. Quite sometime ago, I purchased a very old pitcher and couldn't identify the mark. I searched online, I searched books and still couldn't find the mark. I specifically purchased this book to try and identify the mark, and viola! there it was! Very pleased with my purchase and how easy it is to identify a mark on a piece of pottery or porcelain when I'm on the road searching for that "Antiques Roadshow" blockbuster purchase....*yeah right.* ;) I wish I would have purchased this book sooner!

Personally I Think This Book Was a BIG Waste of Money!

Created: 12/03/08
This is a PAIN to use unless the mark/stamp is very clear and/or you can already read the maker's name. IF that is the case and you want to date a piece, the internet is free (the eBay Boards are very helpful!)and much more informative than this book that gives little to NO information. Want to date a piece with this book? An example of the info you may get will be 1825 to TODAY. When searching for a mark in this book the sections are divided by circles, crowns etc. Sounds easy enough but if for example the stamp you are looking for has no other mark but a circle with a letter, most often you have to check both sections of the book. Still not there? Maybe the circle had a crown but it has worn off! Make sure you check there too! You have to get really creative to use this book. I have yet to find ONE mark that I needed to research and I have had this for over a year. When I so find a mark on the interent that I have been hunting for and I check the Kovel book it's NEVER in there. If you are considering buying this book as a seller that deals with antiques often, SAVE YOUR MONEY. Even if by some miracle you found your stamp you will have to research it anyways to get the correct dating. Only my opinion but I would love to get my money back on this one! I would list it on eBay but wouldn't be able to live with the guilt if I sold it.
