During the sessions with arranger Ray Ellis she was drinking vodka neat, as if it were tap water. Yet, for all her ravaged voice (the sweetness had long gone) she was still an incredible singer. The feeling and tension she manages to put into almost every track sets this album as one of her finest achievements. 'You've Changed' and 'I Get Along Without You Very Well' are high art performances from the singer who saw life from the bottom upwards. The CD reissue masterminded by Phil Shaap is absolutely indispensable.

    Editorial Reviews
Ranked #6 in The NME Top 30 Heartbreak Albums - Ray Ellis' orchestra frames [her] ravaged voice to stunning effect....For Holiday, this was her favorite and most personal album.

    Lady in decline.

    Created: 13/07/06
I know that this album routinely makes the lists of essential recordings, but is it from morbid curiosity or merit?

It's sad, not from the content of the songs, but from the condition of the singer. Billie's voice is shot, finally submitting to the the abuse of her life. The intuitive phrasing persists, but her voice can no longer carry the works musically. It's painful to hear her miss notes, crack on dynamics and lose breath control. She never had great range, but always had great control, to hear this recording is startling. As someone else noted: she was 41, but sounded like she was 71.

There are some moments where her exquisite phrasings overcome her physical inability, like "Violets For Your Furs", but I find these rare.

I also dislike the syrupy string arrangements by Ray Ellis, though some find that they further emphasize the bleakness of her voice. While there are some solo instrumentalists, this is by no means a Jazz recording. The lush strings and choral fills just don't work for me on a Billie Holiday recording.

If you are just finding Billie, please do not start with this recording. For me the painful singing does not complement painful songs, better to seek out her extraordinary Decca recordings or even her Verve recordings than this sad remnant of a great talent.

    Essence of Billie

    Created: 08/10/08
This was Billie's personal favorite and it is hands down, my favorite, too. Billie's life wasn't a happy one, but it was the depth of her suffering that made her music and this album great. "Best of" Albums are great fun, but for a true Billie album as a work of art, this can't be beat.

    Lady Day

    Created: 09/02/09
This is a great album. Billie's voice writhes in pain, and it's remarkable to listen to it. Especially compared to her earlier releases. She had a hard life, and her recordings don't hide it. Especially Lady In Satin. It's heartbreakingly beautiful.

    Lady Day's Last

    Created: 09/04/07
I am a Lady Day fan and have a selected collection of her CD albums. When I saw this one, read the review and realized this was her last album before her untimely death, I had to have it. It is truly a fine example of how she expresses the emotional turmoil of her brief life. I believe it is the best album in my collection.
