Editorial reviews

"Bridges delivers the sort of seamless, unforced performance that is usually overlooked by those who bestow industry awards but that tends to linger and grow over the years."
New York Times - Dave Kehr (02/21/2006)

4 star out of 5 -- "TOP GEAR fans will relish the old-school racing, but Bridges' laconic charisma carries it over the finish line on its own."
Total Film - Neil Smith (11/01/2011)

What was the point of this?

Tom Wolf's book was fabulous, but the movie is just another lousy racing movie. It is a lot more fun to listen to Junior Johnson tell stories. I don't even understand the plot or point of this movie - he doesn't get the girl, he doesn't get to be an owner/driver like he wanted to... I don't understand what the movie is about. If you want to know what race drivers are like, get the Evil Knevil movie. If you want to see the best car movie of all time and learn a little bit about bootleggers, then go for Thunder Road. If you want to know about Southern Stock Car Racing, read Tom Wolf's book The Last American Hero.

Roots of Nascar

Created: 28/05/10
This is a movie about the roots of Nascar, and the story of one of it's legends...Junior Johnson. The film was shot in Hickory NC and it's surrounding areas. Many of the racecar drivers were some of today's biggest racing heroes. Tommy Houston, one of the pioneers of the Nascar Busch Series, lead the field in some of the most exciting scenes of the film. Hickory Speedway was the main track location.

This was Jeff Bridges first film. In watching the movie, you see why the actor has gone on to win awards and accolades for his talent. This was also one of Gary Busey's first films. Both seemed to fit the bill and added the accents that made the film realistic to the time and the sport.

Junior Johnson grew up as the son of a moonshiner. This was the family business, until the local authorities blew up his daddy's operation. His dad spent time in prison, which left Junior responsible for earning a living for his family. He accomplished that through racing.

This is a collectible for any true Nascar fan. I recommend adding it to your library.

I decided to buy this product from half.com because it is rare and hard to find. I got a really good bargain and truely did save about 50% from regular retail pricing. The movie was a gift for my husband. He used to watch the movie as a kid and tried to catch it on television one night but missed it. I watched it and really enjoyed it too. It is about a backwoods kid who runs moonshine and uses his acquired driving skills to make it big in the racing industry.
