Last Boy: Mickey Mantle and the End of America's Childhood by Jane Leavy (2010, Hardcover)

Author: Jane Leavy | Publisher: HarperCollins | Language: English

Product description

Synopsis
Between the image of Yankee superstar Mickey Mantle as a grinning 19-year-old phenom and a seriously ill alcoholic who, at age 63--just weeks from death--faced the cameras at a news conference and told America's youth, "Don't be like me, " there was a human being who is brought to life in all his complexity and pathos by biographer Jane Leavy. She uses a 1983 interview with the Mick (she was a sports reporter for the Washington Post at the time) as a pivot for the story, supplementing it with her childhood memories of Mantle and over five hundred interviews. Selected by Publishers Weekly as a 2010 Top 100 Book and by the New York Times Book Review as a Notable Book of 2010.

Publisher's Note
"Drawing on more than 500 interviews with loved ones and fellow baseball players, the author crafts a deeply personal biography of the Yankee great, weaving her own memories of the major-league slugger with an authoritative account of his life on and off the field. By the best-selling author of Sandy Koufax. 200,000 first printing."

Industry Reviews
"...Leavy comes as close as perhaps anyone ever has to answering "What makes Mantle Mantle?"...THE LAST BOY is something new in the history of the histories of the Mick. It is hard fact, reported by someone greatly skilled at that craft, assembled into an atypical biography by someone equally skilled at doing that, and presented so that the reader and not the author draws nearly all the conclusions."

WHAT A READ!!!! AMAZING!!!

Created: 20/01/11
This book was a last-minute Christmas gift for my brother, who is an ultimate Yankees/Mantle fan for his entire life...and from his raves, I'm soooo glad I was able to get a copy. This book has it all...the good, the bad & the ugly of baseball history, Yankee memories & of course The Mick! This book is NOT just for Yankee/Mantle fans. It is just as much about a country coming of age - or maybe losing it's innocence - as it is an amazingly indepth memorial to The Mick. Jane Leavy obviously spent time & effort to gather many facts & annectdotal information and that all makes for an excellent read on so many levels! No one will be disappointed in this book for any reason at all...make a point to read it and you'll be glad you did!
