Movie synopsis

Edward Zwick directs this sumptuously designed, action-packed period epic that stars Tom Cruise as Captain Nathan Algren. Algren, a former Civil War hero, is adrift in 1870s San Francisco after the war, a lost soul struggling to stay afloat in a booze-soaked stupor. When he is recruited by the Japanese government to train the Emperor's army, he departs for the unknown shores of Japan and begins training the soldiers in American military tactics. But these skills are useless against a band of samurai rebels led by the proud warrior Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe), and Algren is easily defeated. He is taken to a remote samurai village where he learns samurai warrior codes and ways of life, developing a deep bond with Katsumoto and sharing philosophical conversations with him. Caught between the feudal culture of the ancient samurai warriors and the encroachment of modern society, Algren is forced to choose between his own culture or Katsumoto's. THE LAST SAMURAI is lavish in its dramatic period costumes and intense performances, and will thrill fans of both historical drama and action films.

Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (12/05/2003)

"[With] some of the most impressively realised battles this side of Middle Earth."
Sight and Sound - Ben Walters (02/01/2004)

New York Times - Elvis Mitchell (12/05/2003)

"THE LAST SAMURAI affords the sort of fizzy enjoyment that can come with epic movie endeavors, including a meticulously detailed world unlike our own, an excellent supporting cast and some pulse-pounding fights."

"Beautifully designed, intelligently written, acted with conviction, it's an uncommonly thoughtful epic."

Great Movie even better on HD-DVD

Created: 02/08/07
HD DVD is encoded in High Definition 1080p format. The movie its sharpness, and eye-popping colors are just stunning. Black levels are inky with excellent grey shadow detail, and contrasts are deep. The movie itself is great and if you are already a fan of the DVD the HD DVD is what you want. One problem with HD is that with the HD/Blu Ray debate some stores are not stocking them until there is a clear winner. Not to worry, the store below has hundreds of HD DVDs broken down by genre:

Beautiful photography, interesting story, and good costumes. Uncanningly similar to Shogan but you quickly forget it. While it's not based on fact, enough actual events are intermingled to give it an air of believability. The acting was generally good and the director seems to have really worked at making this film quality. The technical consultants really earned their money on this film! Also, this is the HD DVD (2006 issue) version of the film - probably the top of the line product. You really need to have a good speaker system to go with this particular film. At the time of this review, the seller is completely unknown.

sure, it's a Tom Cruise movie, but a good action flick nonetheless. Lost of swordplay, violent killings, what else do you want?

Movie was quite good despite the ending which I thought was a little hokey. The fight scenes were very well done and the trasformation from a drunken officer changing into a fearless, disclipined warrior was done very well.

A very interesting and involving movie. I wasn't sure I would like it, but it's at the top of my playlist now. If you can get past the fact that Tom Cruise is the lead, you'll love it.
