Even Reluctant Middle-School Readers Love this Book!
Created: 24/01/09
Jeff Kinney's "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw" is the third in a series of books that are designed to look as if they were written and illustrated by Greg Heffley, "The Wimpy Kid," a wise-cracking, self-centered, middle-schooler whose life is filled with suburban misadventures. He has an over-sized head, a prominent nose and three strands of hair. If the other two installments are any indication, many non-reading children, especially boys, may finally be willing to pick up a book.
"The Last Straw" opens with Greg's entry on resolutions to make himself a better person: "Well, the problem is, it's not easy for me to think of ways to improve myself, because I'm already pretty much one of the best people I know." His family consists of an older and younger brother who cause all the problems- as he sees it. He has an enthusiastic mom who easily embarrasses him and a dad who's frustrated that Greg isn't a better athlete.
The over-riding joke throughout the book is that Greg is a deeply flawed protagonist. Some adults miss the joke and complain about Greg's shortcomings, but most kids understand that he isn't perfect and that is precisely why they like him.
Perhaps "The Last Straw's" greatest appeal is that many "reluctant readers"- especially boys, who generally seek entertainment from the Internet, television, and video games- are excited about reading this series. Adults will also find humor in the book, if they approach it with an open mind. The thing to bear in mind is that kids may laugh at Bart Simpson, but they know it isn't appropriate to act like him.

These books are excellent for kids ages 8 to 11 they encourage the kids to read with the funny little stick people and short stories and sayings. The Diary of a wimpy kid Do it yourself book is a cute little diary that gives kids a chance to share their own thoughts and idea on what they think. The back of the book has a diary for them to keep of their daily events. The rest of the book ask questions the kids can answer in their own words it has a place on the front for them to put their own picture. They get to draw in this hard back book which to kids is something you never get to do is right in your books. This book encourages the kids to do so to open up and tell little things about themselves and their families as well as share activities at school with friends and teacher. It is an excellent series and if you buy one you will buy all four. They are clean and a fun way for your child to relax. It is a fun book that I enjoy because my daughter giggles at the silly stories and silly questions. So if you are considering purchasing this series or one of these books go ahead and get them.

Golden read for kids!!!

I homeschool my 10 yr. old son who hates reading. The public school system could not get him to read on his grade level. So, I gave it a shot at home, and when we found this series of books, it was a breeze!!! He loves reading these books, and I don't have to beg and plead to get him to read. Also, he was tested by the public school system, and he is now on grade level! Thanks for the answer to my prayers! Now, we need some more "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" books to read!

This is the fourth book in this series - WE LOVED IT! My kids and I laughed as we read it, so it is a book enjoyed by child AND adult! Easy reading and kid's perspective. We HOPE this is not Jeff Kinney's last in this series, as we LOVE THEM!

My pre-teen loves the series of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. My son finds them very entertaining and I am happy he loves reading them so much. He said they are funny because it is about everyday life between brothers arguing, mischief, and joking around.
Since my son is a middle child with two brothers & a sister, he can relate. He said the storyline makes him want to read more.
Listen, if I can find a decent book for my child to read AND he enjoys it then both of us win.
