Great intentions with good results
Created: 08/10/06
Hollywood seems to find no end of comic book type heroes and legends to resurrect for the silver screen. It can be a bit tedious, wondering what they'll come up with next but they've done well with this entry for the genre. There is much to look at in LXG (catchy abbreviation!), none the least of which is Sean Connery ..... my, my, my; difficult to be a warm-blooded female and not be taken in by the sheer masculinity of Sean Connery.
The problem is, while the intentions of the casting/film director are honorable and admirable, the plot-line and flow are somewhat awkward due to the miscasting of my favorite lead actor. Sean Connery is a little long in the tooth to play Allan Quatermain and seems somewhat detached, almost disinterested in the murky plot. He helps create a movie that is great in some places but only so-so in others. The bits of injected humor are welcome and definitely necessary but they are too few to make you forget what is missing in the general content of the film.
Undoubtedly a very difficult script to cast and probably even more challenging to accurately stage, the results are for the most part good but not what one could consider outstanding by any means. What allows this movie to rise to a 4/5 rating are the tightly filmed action sequences and the wondrous special effects that will have you muttering to yourself, How do they DO that anyway?
The bottom line? Definitely worth a look, particularly if you are a sci-fi/action/adventure kind of movie-goer. And ladies, even if you're not ..... my, my, my.
Regards, Deborah

Remembering when

I grew up in the late boomers generation. I cut yards on the weekend to have a little cash to buy those things that mom and dad could not afford. Comic books.... This movie is awesome. It combines child hood heroes of old with todays fresh appeal. I could only wish my dreams as a child were this imaginative.
The ride of course is with memorable giants in literature like Alan Quartermane, Captain Nemo, Mina Harker, Dorian Gray, The Invisible man, Mr Hyde and Tom Sawer who is all grown up and well really kinda cool.
Lets get this disclaimer going though.. If you are not into sci-fi or action or comics stay the heck away from this movie. It is not for you. If you on the other hand like if you have a flare for imagination and if you are an outgoing fun loving hang on to the edge of your seat kind of person THIS MOVIE IS FOR YOU!
The premise is that someone is trying to draw the world into a bitter war and that Brittan assembles a team to go after the bad guy. It is typical good vs evil, The special effects are really ingenious.
I am a self described movie nut who loves sci-fi, horror, action and occasional documentary.

Movie adaptation of Graphic Novel
Created: 28/10/08
This was a comic book or series of comic books that were bound together into a Graphic Novel. Like "300", "V for Vendetta" or the New "Watchmen" this was much better left as a Comic book and not a Movie. This story line was not from the Book but completely movie generated. I always question why Hollywood takes a perfectly good book and changes it for the movies. But Alan Moore is a Comic Genius and this is pulled off quite well. This is a Pre 1900 Super Hero Team that is formed under Sean Connery's Character Alan Quartermain. There is an Invisible Man, Captian Nemo (20,000 Leagues under the Sea), A Vampiress (Mina Harker from Dracula), Dr. Jekell/Mr. Hyde, Tom Sawyer(this guy was never in the comic), and others. This follows there adventures against a Super Villian named The Phantom (not of the Opera, but he does have a silly mask). If you are a comic or Hero fan this is worth a watch.

Great Introduction to real books!!

I absolutely love this movie. It may not be for everyone but all I can say is Sean Connery as Allan Quatermain and Stewart Townsend as Dorian Grey does Haggard and Wilde justice. I'm not a comic book fan ~ I actually read so I enjoy all the references. By the way, Nemo is great. Not dissing the great James Mason but I always ... and I think so did Verne, picture the captain as a tortured Indian. Blah, blah Enjoy

One of the Greatest Fantasy and Action Movies EVER!
Created: 17/04/11
This movie is an absolute must-have for your collection. It portrays the great legends Captain Nemo, Tom Sawyer, Dr. Hyde, Quatermain, played by Sean Connery, and Mrs. Harker as they battle the mysterious villain, The Fantom, as he attempts to launch global Armageddon. These heros unite together to defeat The Fantom and save the world in a movie all on its own.
