The Legend of Zorro (DVD, 2006, Full Screen)

Martin Campbell, Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta-Jones|Theatrical release: 2005 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Catherine Zeta Jones captivated audiences and shot to stardom via her role as Elena in the 1998 take on the Zorro legend, MASK OF ZORRO. This sequel, set in 1850, finds her married to Alejandro, aka Zorro (Antonio Banderas, also returning to reprise his character from MASK OF ZORRO), and demanding he stop all the derring-do and spend time with their smart-as-a-whip 10-year-old son, Joaquin (Adrian Alonso). The boy has some serious acrobatic skills, but is unaware of his father's secret identity. He can only look askance as his parents separate and Dad starts spending too much time with his hard-drinking horse, while Mom lets herself be wooed by the odious Count Armand (Rufus Sewell). It's up to little Zorro Joaquin to get to the bottom of things and get his folk-hero parents back into action. Jones is a stunning sight in her elaborate lace-and-linen ensembles, and there's some complex DA VINCI CODE-style secret society skullduggery, but otherwise this sequel has more in common with classic old Walt Disney comedies like THE APPLE DUMPLING GANG or Robert Rodiguez's SPY KIDS than with the 1998 movie. The swordfighting and death-defying action sequences are all totally bloodless, and director Martin Campbell--who also helmed the '98 film--keeps the dialogue very contemporary and child-friendly throughout.

The Legend of Zorro (2006, DVD)

Created: 06/03/06
After seven years, Zorro (Banderas) is back. After stopping an attempt to disrupt California's vote to join the United States, he returns to his wife Elena (Zeta-Jones) and son Joaquin (Alonso). Elana wants him to stop being Zorro now, but he thinks there is still a need. A huge argument leads to a divorce. Three months later, Zorro is a drunk and Elena is being courted by a French count by the name of Armand (Sewell). Zorro begins to think that Armand is up to no good, and begins looking into things, only to find something surprising. Now, Zorro must go into action to save the day.

"The Legend of Zorro" may have taken too long to hit the big screen. It has been a long time since "The Mask of Zorro" entertained audiences. While there is still some of the magic left, it is nowhere near the magic of the original. Banderas and Zeta-Jones are back, but their chemistry is a little off. The story is ok, but not good enough to sustain 128 minutes. That is not to say that there is nothing to be enjoyed here. There are a number of moments throughout the film that work, but as a whole, "Zorro" is lacking something.

As much as it would be difficult to shoot a sequel to Snow White and Peter Pan and promised the same freshness and excitement. I would say this sequel has given its best and would provide perfect fun for a family gathering, which I suspect was what the studio had decided to do in the first place.

This Sequel Is...

This Sequel Is...pretty darn good, because of the pairing of Catherine and Antonio again.

Other than that, it would almost be a continuation of the first movie, because of the similiar plot, same action sequences, same stunts(?) etc.

However if you like the first movie like I did, then this is a good revisiting to that one!

Besides, Catherine is HOT !

Pure Fun!

Critics hated this film, but my husband and I loved it. Everyone in it seems to be having a great time, and the fun is passed along to the audience. The stunts and special effects are light-hearted and amazing. You don't have to buy them as believeable, just sit back and enjoy. Especially loved Catherine Zeta-Jones,sword in hand and seemingly unencumbered by corset and petticoats, battling two opponents simultaneously.

Great flick for the kids as they grow older.

This is the sequal to The Mask of Zorro a few years back. Great action and the kids liked it in the theater so it was a natural for home viewing as well. I'm not crazy about how they display the divorce process for children, but at least the characters end up together in the end.

Great Family Fun!!!

Created: 13/10/06
With a great cast on hand, Zorro rides for the people yet again against evil villains all while dealing with disfunctional family problems. This is another great adventure for the whole family that has some good laughs and a lesson in moral values. The most touching part of the film is how the family must unite in order to overcome evil and save the day. I suggest you check this one out. If you liked 'Mask of Zorro' you will like this one as well. 4/5
