Movie synopsis

Director Edward Zwick's epic romance, set against the backdrop of WWI and the wide sky and rugged terrain of Montana, stars Anthony Hopkins as William Ludlow, an idealistic retired colonel who disapproves of the war and the army's indecent treatment of Native Americans. Abandoned by his blue-blooded wife, Ludlow raises his three sons in the remote foothills of Montana with the help of Native American friends. Before the war, Samuel (Henry Thomas) brings home his fiancée from the East Coast, Susannah (Julia Ormond), a stunning beauty who can ride, rope, and hunt like the Ludlow boys. When the war breaks out, Samuel, the youngest and most idealistic son, enlists in the army. Brothers Alfred (Aidan Quinn) and Tristan (Brad Pitt) follow suit, more as protectors than as cohorts. Despite their best efforts, however, Samuel dies in battle. Upon returning home, Tristan becomes involved with Susannah, who is devastated by her loss but profoundly attracted to the brooding brother. However, tormented by his inability to save his little brother's life, Tristan abandons her and sets out on a long journey of self-discovery. During his absence, Alfred reveals his own passion for Susannah. Although she does not reciprocate his feelings, Susannah--who has despaired of ever seeing Tristan again--agrees to become his wife. Ultimately, Tristan does return, setting off a dangerous conflict between the brothers.

This movie is great but could have a better title

If you like good storytelling with good characters that age through the movie with tragedy and love, this is the movie for you. Plus the cinematography is fantastic! It cries for viewing on a big screen!

The first time that I saw it, I did not like this movie. I think that I got confused by all the changes in time and people as it went along.

The second time that I saw it, I loved it. The love of the three brothers (Alfred, Tristan, and Samuel) for each other is rare and stands out boldly! The anti-war attitude of the father, William Ludlow (Anthony Hopkins) really meant something since he was a retired Army officer trying to shield his family from the government, prohibition, and red tape. And it is World War I that is the catalyst for the evolution of this story.

The lady, Susannah (Julia Ormond), who comes to their Montana ranch as Samuel's fiance and bride and changes all their lives is the most important part of the story. What happens to her life, the father's life, and the three brothers' lives is monumental and an American tragedy. Brad Pitt as Tristan steals every scene in the movie that he is in, and this movie made him a real star.

A better title for this movie would be "Montana Tragedy".

Sit back and don't get up. Otherwise, you will be like me the first time and get lost. This is a story worth your ultimate attention.

One of the better movies I've seen. This story revolves around a single woman and the hearts of three loving brothers living in Montana (I think). The woman (Julia Ormond) is innocent in her ways but because of her beauty and her character, all three brothers (Henry Thomas, Adian Quinn, and Brad Pitt) fall in love with her based on their own views of her. Anthony Hopkins (yes...Hannibal Lecter) plays their father who's wife lives in the city and he has to raise his boys in the country backwoods. The setting, scenery, enrapturing plot, and mystique make this a film worth its time to watch.

A tender story with lots of action about a family. Brad Pitt is at his best. Anthony Hopkins portrays the father of three boys that he has raised without their Mother. Anthony Hopkins gives one of his best performances. The movie will bring you to tears many times. I'm so glad to own a copy of it. It's one of my favorite all time movies.

Legends of The Fall

This is a very good movie that I haven't seen in a long long time.. Actually I am not a fan of Brad Pitt and when this movie came out I was actually watching it for Aidan Quinn... I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and poor Julia Ormond, all those brothers... Brad Pitt actually looked sexy and hot in this movie. Again, he may be a good actor, but I'm not a rush to the theater to see him.. This movie had a lot of action and I will enjoy watching it again since it's been forever.
