Movie synopsis

Returning once again to the Baltimore of his youth, director Barry Levinson adds another installment to his Baltimore Trilogy (DINER, TIN MEN, AVALON), tackling the emotionally charged subjects of anti-Semitism and racism--in addition to his standard themes of family, friendship, and loyalty--in LIBERTY HEIGHTS. In 1954, Ben Kurtzman (Ben Foster), a Jewish teen from Baltimore, is intrigued by the new girl in his class. The problem? Sylvia (Rebekah Johnson) is one of the first African American students to attend his school. While Ben and Sylvia pursue a forbidden friendship in the early days of desegregation, Ben's older brother, Van (Adrien Brody), is smitten with Dubbie (Carolyn Murphy), a beautiful wealthy WASP who may as well live in another world. As the Kurtzman brothers struggle with their budding relationships and new cultures, their father, Nate (Joe Mantegna), is busy dealing with his own problems. His failing burlesque show is a front for running numbers, and he owes a huge payout to Little Melvin, a small-time African American drug dealer who is certain that Nate is trying to stiff him because of the color of his skin. Levinson once again employs a subtly entertaining visual style that allows the terrific dialogue and serious story lines to play out with realism and depth.

The Jewish suburban experience in 1960's Baltimore

Created: 01/08/10
Segregation in the suburbs of Baltimore was largely along religious lines until middle class Africans began to move in. The patriarch of this particular family runs a burlesque show as a front for numbers running. He eventually runs afoul of a local drug dealer who's number hits. The older son falls for an alcoholic debutant with a complicated emotional life, the younger falls for an African American doctor's daughter-Bigotry and racism thematically addressed, a good period piece, fairly predictable.

I watched this because of Ben Foster, and I understood it was a movie most people will never hear of let alone see. If you ever do though, chances are you'll enjoy the simple pleasures and unique factors this story employs. It's an unusual place and time set, but one worth learning about.

I very much enjoyed the sence of entering the mindset of the 50's. Ethnic prejudices were more open and almost seemed to be institunalized. The Jewish boys just wanted a better party scene but, found a new sence of themselves via the spolied Goya kids. Played for some laughs the movie is entertaining and nostalgic. I'm a Adrien Brody fan that wanted a peek at his earlier work. His future as a lead actor(pianist)is foreshawdowed by this movie.

Adrian Brody is beautiful in this film. He usually plays odd-ball characters, but in this early film, he is cast as a good-looking romantic lead. He pulls this off with charm and finesse.

Great movie about growing up in Baltimore in the 1950s. Bought movie for college sociology review project. A humorous look at social tension in the era of desegregation and changing social structure between protestants and jews.
