Biggie Smalls, as he was known, quickly became one of rap's most respected MCs after the 1994 release of his debut album, READY TO DIE. His music sparked the comeback of East Coast hip-hop, while his very being added fire to rap's over-publicized East-West rivalry. For some (see "Playa Hater"), Biggie's success was too much to handle, and he became a primary target in hip-hop's continuing feud. Never feeding into that war on wax, B.I.G. chose to remain silent, until LIFE AFTER DEATH became a reality, and the situation spoke for itself.Although song titles like "You're Nobody (Til Somebody Kills You)" eerily mirror the real-life tragedy, the music on LIFE AFTER DEATH serves to bring the Notorious B.I.G. back to life. As anything that he appeared on, the production (by a superstar conglomerate including Sean "Puffy" Combs and the Wu-Tang Clan's RZA) is top-notch, and his lyrical skills are razor sharp. Biggie was loved for his versatility. On "Notorious Thugs," he switches up his style to rhyme like a member of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Tracks like "Hypnotize" showcase his ability to be hardcore and commercial at the same time. Another talented rapper lost to senseless violence; B.I.G.'s winning album streak will, sadly, have to end here.

Village Voice (19980224)

5 Mics (out of 5) - ...Big documented the illmatic mean streets of his Bedford Stuyvesant stomping grounds....LIFE AFTER DEATH's finest moments are the instantly catchy, future-radio-favorites....Big's potent verses of violent death became a self-prophecy indeed.
The Source (19970501)

...LIFE AFTER DEATH truly rises, though, when Biggie is full control; he tells tales like a true alum of those hard-to-creep Brooklyn streets....LIFE AFTER DEATH is an olive branch to his divided kingdom....Long live the king!

3.5 Stars (out of 5) - ...a worthy and more mature, if less uniformly spectacular, successor to his 1994 debut....there's considerable pleasure and fun to be had when an artist feels free to stretch out and try anything, and those pleasures are available in abundance on LIFE AFTER DEATH...

Biggie!

Created: 22/04/08
The Notorious B.I.G. (AKA Christopher Wallace/Biggie Smalls) second album "Life After Death" (1997) is excellent. Biggies amazing lyrics, wordplay and delivery were what got me hooked to his music, starting with his classic first album "Ready to Die". Somebody's Gotta Die" is my favourite track on disc one, Biggies dark story of murder and survival is very powerful. Laid back singles "Hypnotize" and "Mo Money Mo Problems" were well made commercial tracks. And the Notorious was always entertaining when talking to/about the ladies whether it be with R Kelly on "#! *@ You Tonight" or on "I Got a Story to Tell". Disc two opens with "Notorious Thugs" feat. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony a unique collabration. Biggie came real, on his dedication to a fallen friend on "Miss U" feat. 112. Biggie drops a wealth of knowledge for the hustlers on "Ten Crack Commandments". As dark as Biggie could get he could be positive and loved his family as it shows "Sky is The Limit" feat. 112 an outstanding track about his life and overcoming. The final track "You're Nobody (Til Somebody Kills You)" is exceptional, Notorious knew how close death could be. "Life After Death" is an album I would recommend for every Hip Hop collection.

A tragic loss to Hip Hop...a LEGEND'S last work.

Created: 21/12/06
This dual disc CD set was the last album that was put out by Christopher Wallace, a.k.a. the Notorious BIG, before his tragic death in the mean streets of California. Many say the death of Notorious was retaliation for the death of another Hip Hop legend, Tupac Shakur, who was murdered in Las Vegas, Nevada, after leaving the Mike Tyson fight at the MGM Grand. Did Notorious really know his death was coming? You be the judge. I love the album because it shows you the raw talent Notorious really had. He loved his music, and you could hear it in every verse. While Tupac and Death Row dissed him and Bad Boy records, BIG never fired back. BIG wasn't like them. He just wanted to do what he loved best. I love this album for cuts like "Notorious Thugs," which feature BIG and Bone Thugs and Harmony. Also I love the cut "Mo Money Mo Problems," which features Mase and Puff Daddy, a.k.a. Diddy. All together there is a total of 24 tracks, and you will not be disappointed with a single one. They are all good. If you like Rap and Hip Hop that is more than just "bling bling," you will love this album. It is his best work ever.

The Reincarnation of the Notorious B.I.G.

Created: 11/08/07
Being from the South, you don't like a lot of East Coast music. But this is one of the greatest rap albums of all time. Excellent lyricism, and sharp, banging beats. North, South, East and West can ride and chill, smoke, and have sex to this album. I can't leave the house to go on a road trip without it. Notorious B.I.G. solidified himself as a rap god with this album. R.I.P. Notorious B.I.G.
