    Synopsis
A man must wrestle with a dreadful fate in this supernatural thriller by master of psychological suspense Dean Koontz. What if you knew which days in your life would be the most pivotal--and the most perilous? Well, pastry chef Jimmy Tock knows. While Jimmy was being born, Jimmy's grandfather, lying on his deathbed, predicted that five terrible days would come in Jimmy's future--not including that particular day, during which a clown massacred several people in the very same hospital where both Jimmy and his grandfather were patients. The book charts the course of Jimmy's horrifying destiny over each of those five days, all of which occur in Jimmy's early adulthood.

    Publisher's Note
A dying man's clairvoyant prophesies about his grandson, Jimmy Tock, reveal five terrifying and horrific events, occuring on five different days at different periods in his life, that will turn the young man's world upside down.

With his bestselling blend of nail-biting intensity, daring artistry, and storytelling magic, Dean Koontz returns with an emotional roller coaster of a tale filled with enough twists, turns, shocks, and surprises for ten ordinary novels. Here is the story of five days in the life of an ordinary man born to an extraordinary legacy—a story that will challenge the way you look at good and evil, life and death, and everything in between.

Jimmy Tock comes into the world on the very night his grandfather leaves it. As a violent storm rages outside the hospital, Rudy Tock spends long hours walking the corridors between the expectant fathers' waiting room and his dying father's bedside. It's a strange vigil made all the stranger when, at the very height of the storm's fury, Josef Tock suddenly sits up in bed and speaks coherently for the frist and last time since his stroke.

What he says before he dies is that there will be five dark days in the life of his grandson—five dates whose terrible events Jimmy will have to prepare himself to face. The first is to occur in his twentieth year; the second in his twent-third year; the third in his twenty-eighth; the fourth in his twenty-ninth; the fifth in his thirtieth.

Rudy is all too ready to discount his father's last words as a dying man's delusional rambling. But then he discovers that Josef also predicted the time of his grandson's birth to the minute, as well as his exact height and weight, and the fact that Jimmy would be born with syndactyly—the unexplained anomal of fused digits—on his left foot. Suddenly the old man's predictions take on a chilling significance.

What terrifying events await Jimmy on these five dark days? What nightmares will he face? What challenges must he survive? As the novel unfolds, picking up Jimmy's story at each of these crisis points, the path he must follow will defy every expectation. And with each crisis he faces, he will move closer to a fate he could never have imagined. For who Jimmy Tock is and what he must accomplish on the five days when his world turns is a mystery as dangerous as it is wondrous—a struggle against an evil so dark and pervasive, only the most extraordinary of human spirits can shine through.

    Industry Reviews
"...Mr. Koontz is a skillful storyteller....LIFE EXPECTANCY offers a clear illustration of what he does right."
New York Times - Janet Maslin (12/06/2004)

"Book after book, year after year, this author climbs to the top of the charts. Why? His readers know: because he is a master storyteller and a daring writer, and because, in his novels, he gives readers bright hope in a dark world. His new book is an exemplar of his extraordinary work....Koontz is a true original and this novel, one of his most unusual yet, will leave readers aglow and be a major bestseller." (starred review)
    Publishers Weekly (11/15/2004)

"It takes a talented reader to successfully perform a book like this, and actor John Bedford Lloyd does so marvelously....While Lloyd's portrayal of Jimmy Tock is terrific, it is the personalities he gives to the rest of the Tock family, as well as the clowns and other evil circus performers, that make the reading superb and the listening so memorable."
    AudioFile - Daniel J. Siegel

    Life Expectancy by Dean Koontz

    Created: 02/01/08
On the night he was born, Jimmy Tocks's grandfather, who was in a stroke induced coma, suddenly awoke and predicted, among other things, five "terrible days" for his grandson, between his twentieth and thirtieth birthdays and then dies as Jimmy is born.

Jimmy was raised to expect the worse, on the "Doom Dates" his grandfather had predicted ... but nothing could ever have prepared him for the twists his life would take. The night of his birth was bad enough... but Jimmy has five more days of terror and revelation awaiting him... I couldn't put this book ... I sat at the edge of my seat ... every time the Tock family was going through one of the Doom Days ...

By the end of this book, you won't look at clowns the same way LOL!. A great book from the beginning to the end. Packed with interesting characters ... intense thrills ... Life Expectancy is highly recommended!

So far, my favorite book from Dean Koontz ...

A great story. Homicidal clowns and delicious pastries.

I read the book a few years ago and it still stands as my favorite Dean Koontz story. I wanted to reread it and since I'm a rarther slow reader, I decided to try the audiobook. Little is lost in this version but the narrator seems to lose some steam toward the end of most chapters. You won't notice it happening, but at the start of each chapter you'll see what I mean. He does however use several voices for the different characters which makes the story easier to follow. Jimmy Tock stands right up there with Odd Thomas as a memorable Koontz character.

I was already a Dean Koontz fan, but this book is one of my favorites. This book made me smile nearly every page when I read it and is the first book I've bought a recording of that I've already read.

    LIFE EXPECTANCY Audio CD

    Created: 05/07/06
I LOVED this book when I had a chance to listen to it from the Library. I think it's one of Dean Koontz's best. When I needed to find a gift for my brother, I thought of this book and a couple others. My brother is very difficult to buy for, but this fit the bill because he didn't KNOW he wanted it.

Because of the great deals I got on EBAY, I was able to get him a total of 4 audio CDs.
