Composer/Lyricist: Adam Guettel.Original Broadway Cast: Kelli O'Hara, Patti Cohenour, Sarah Uriarte Berry, Victoria Clark , Matthew Morrison, Mark Harelik, Michael Berresse, Beau Gravitte, Felicity LaFortune, Joseph Siravo.Going into the family business was not what the grandson of songwriting icon Richard Rodgers originally had in mind, but composer/lyricist Adam Guettel rose to the occasion while grabbing the ring at his own steady pace. His musical THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA tells the touching love story of an American tourist and an Italian countryman in post-WWII Firenze. Guettel's unabashed romanticism includes soaring, long-lined melodies, rich and deep harmonic language not far from the land of Sondheim, and lush orchestrations.The refreshing, wide-eyed naivete felt by the young Clara is aptly translated in her solo "The Beauty Is," while Fabrizio's charming awkwardness with English (and with courting a beautiful stranger) is winningly expressed in their duet "Passeggiata. " The exciting rhythms of "Hysteria" and "Octet" recall Stravinsky's neo-classical language. The story's tragic secret is achingly revealed by Clara's mother in "The Beauty Is (Reprise)." All the proceedings are supported by a superior cast including Victoria Clark (URINETOWN, TITANIC), Kelli O'Hara (DRACULA, JEKYLL & HYDE) and Matthew Morrison (HAIRSPRAY, FOOTLOOSE). The future of musical theater may look murky to some. But Guettel's sure-handed amalgam of styles has a voice of his own, one that can point the way.

) LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA is probably not for everyone; its complex, sophisticated score borders on atonal. Audiences expecting melodic, Richard Rodgers-type songs will probably be disappointed, and will find this material offputting, in much the same way an earlier generation reacted to the the sophistication and innovativeness of Stephen Sondheim. But this score, by (ironically) Richard Rodgers' grandson, is lush and brilliant, and creates -- in its own way -- a haunting, romantic mood right from the first strains of the overture. The score and the show are intelligent, thoughtful, and deeply moving, and the CD, with its fine performances, is well worth a listen. "Serious" music lovers may find it more immediately accessible, but even those who are more casual musical theatre fans should give it a serious listen.

I saw the musical live on stage and I loved it - such a wonderful romance and mother-daughter love story. The songs were not as memorable as many other Broadway musicals, but I wanted to hear them again.
Much ado about nothing

) I must be missing something, because the reviews for the music and performance of "The Light in the Piazza" are almost entirely positive, if not gushing. But to me, the music is dull and unenjoyable. Ditto fot the play, which is nothing but a string of cliches and one-dimensional stereotype characters. I love musicals, and I love romance. I hated this.

Because we were going to see the play, and because my husband loves music of almost all kinds, I bought the CD expressly for him. Although well done, it was a disappointment in that he didn't like the music. He felt it was too operatic. It's certainly true to the play, which he didn't care for either. Had I known beforehand I wouldn't have bought it. For a fan of the play, which by the way, won 6 Tonys in 2005, it should be great!
