Movie synopsis

A slice of musical history was created on February 7th, 2003, when a dazzling array of blues artists gathered at New York City's Radio City Music Hall. With luminaries such as B.B. King, Solomon Burke, Ruth Brown, Mavis Staples, Buddy Guy, and Dr. John among the lineup, this was always destined to be a night to remember. But the organizers were savvy enough to up the ante even further by integrating a comprehensive--albeit by their own admission, incomplete--history of the genre into the evening's festivities. Director Antoine Fuqua (KING ARTHUR) was there with a full crew to record the event, capturing moments of magic both on stage and behind the scenes for LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE. Fuqua also splices in some of the archival footage that the organizers showed on the night, including many of the Radio City artists performing and speaking at a much younger age. The influence of the blues over popular music is vast, and so performers such as Aerosmith, Chuck D from Public Enemy, and David Johansen are brought on stage to vie with their counterparts from a more traditional strain of the genre. Poignant moments come thick and fast, with many of the musicians reminiscing about the old times, and realizing that this would probably be the last occasion on which they were all gathered in the same room. An inspiring historical document, Fuqua's film captures a dying breed of artists, but also points to their lasting legacy and influence which will indefinitely loom large over the music scene.

This concert is one of the BEST BLUES CONCERTS ever. B.B. King has the ability to bring out the most talented and gifted artists to perform with. He is invaluable to American music as a whole. The most spetacular of all the performances is Buddy Guy doing "Voodoo Chile" He is accompanied by Angelique Kidjo who sings and dances like the wind. She is extrodinary.
Bonie Raitt, John Fogerty, Bill Cosby, Macy Gray, Odetta, The Legendary Ruth Brown, and Robert Cray. WOW !!!!

Also, please check out B.B. King's DVD - A Night of Blistering Blues - This is just as good - and it comes with a CD.

Historic Charity Blues Concert

Created: 21/01/10
I recently saw the "Lightining in a Bottle" on cable and decided to buy the DVD. It was well worth the purchase. As an avid lover of blues and what I call hole-in-the-wall music it was nice to watch and experience a concert and documentary with so many veterans of blues, jazz, rock, and rap pay tribute to music that has had such an effect on so many musicians and careers. And as an added bonus I got to discover the one man who had a major influence on Jimi Hendrix....(buy the DVD, you'll be surprised!!)

This DVD is a must have for any true music lover.

Smokin' Blues

If you love the blues, hard rock, hazz, hip-hop, rap, country or rock, this should be in your library. Watching these incredible and often unsung icons of blues will give you a deeper comprehension of where modern American music got its roots. You will never understand the blues, or jazz, or for that matter, rap. These genres of music aren't intellectual forays into the mind. But by listening and hearing what the masters of the idiom have to say about their music, you may begin to comprehend what it's all about. Pain, joy, lust, sorrow, elation, bitter regret---many of the emotions we may never politely express---the blues, and the blues child, jazz, and its grandchild rap and hip-hop can express. Both raw and refined in the same measure, this movie gives a broad overview and intimate portrait of the artists and music called the blues. Particularly great are the snippets of interchange between artists who have come up together and champion each other. Hot music and you see why the old dogs don't need tricks, huge amps, fireworks, etc. It's all in the music.
