Line 6 Pod XT on the floor pre-amp/effects pedal
Created: 09/08/10
I love Line 6 products and all the sounds that are attainable in all their products. The Pod XT is a all steel construction and is very durable. All the sounds that are factory can all be changed if you don't like them. All that you have to do is be patient and enjoy searching and creating tones. If you don't enjoy this and you merely want to plug into an amp or a few stomp boxes then this is not the unit for you. You really need to read the manual and dive into the many pages not only in the manual but in the digital pages within the device too. You can also download additional FX packs and Amp packs from Line 6 online. Line 6 has pretty much thought of everything regarding signal flow, amp/cabinet combination, effect selections...ect... Currently I'm actually bypassing the amp selections and using the sound of my own amp (an 1970's Fender Bassman) and merely using the stopboxes and effects on different patches. I never thought of doing it like this but that's because I was hesitant to read the manual but after doing some reading the good folks at Line 6 suggested this thought process (that is if you actually like the sound of your amp, which I do) so I learned something from the manual once again. I'm not a big fan of manuals but with the Line 6 gear reading can actually be beneficial....much to my surprise!
I can't say enough good things about the Pod XT from Line 6. It is soild and road worthy and I always find great sounds within the parameters in the digital realm. If you are a player that plays in a cover band and you need a boat load of patches then this unit is great. However, if you only need a few sounds like a good clean patch, a good dirty patch and a good solo patch then you can find that as well. For the money you can't beat them in my opinion but again you need an open mind and be willing to get "into" the machine because it's not like four or five stomp boxes on the floor...there is a lot you need to learn before creating your own sounds. However, if you like the factory sounds then you need not look any further. You can actually save the factory sounds to user patches and then you have them all in a row as you need them for you own special banks. Again, refer to the manual on how to do that because they detail it for you very easily.
If you got a Pod Xt or the newer model Pod X3 then just be patient with it and give it a fair shake. If all else fails then look around on-line for tutorials on how to build sounds...there are many examples out there that are very good learning tools. I have found some of them very useful. Enjoy!

Best amp modeler/effects unit for direct performing or recording
| Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

In my experience, both live and recording, the XT Live is the best multi-effects/amp modeler I've used. I have owned the POD 1.0, 2.0 and the VOX Tonelab LE. My review is based upon using the XT Live for direct recording or live playing into a P.A. or to the FOH mixer. For using with an amp I would probably have gone with the BOSS GT-8 or GT-10.
The amp models are excellent and offer a wide range of tonal variety. The effects are very useful, not the to quality of some of the top processors but they do the job very well. Editing the XT Live on the unit itself takes some getting used to but when using the free patch editor it is very easy to dial in what you are looking for. The factory presets are, for the most part, a disservice to the XT Live. It takes some tweaking to get the sounds you're looking for but the time is well worth it. The most under rated effect of the XT Live is the Parametric EQ. Don't be afraid to turn it on and mess around with the different frequencies. Really useful when playing different venues, if the high mids are missing, boost them, if the lows are overpowering, cut them. Bottom line, great unit especially for the price they are going for used.
