Album Notes
Personnel: Charlie Starr (vocals, guitar, banjo); Paul Jackson (vocals, guitar); Richard Turner (vocals); Brit Turner (drums).Photographers: James Klotz; James Klotz. On their debut full-length CD, Little Piece of Dixie, the five members of Blackberry Smoke (singer/guitarist Charlie Starr, guitarist/singer Paul Jackson, bassist/singer Richard Turner, keyboardist Brandon Still, and drummer Brit Turner) play Southern rock in the Lynyrd Skynyrd tradition. Starr has a strong, twangy voice, and he and Jackson keep the heavy riffs coming in country-rock songs extolling the virtues of a Southern, blue-collar man's blowing off steam by drinking, driving around, and maybe enjoying a little female companionship. Typical of the material is "Bottom of This," in which a man gets home from work and asks to be allowed to at least have one beer before he has to engage domestic problems or talk politics. Although the band is much closer to rock than outlaw country, the album has a clear Nashville leaning, produced by Dann Huff and Justin Niebank, and featuring some formula Music City songwriting. At the end, Blackberry Smoke try for an anthem with "Freedom Song," another paean to hitting the road in the pickup truck and putting a cowboy boot to the gas pedal in search of escape from a workingman's troubles. But when Starr declares his desire to "sing along to my freedom song" on the radio as the guitars play a familiar twin-lead part, it seems likely that the song he really has in mind is Skynyrd's "Free Bird," not something by his own band. ~ William Ruhlmann

If you are a fan of Southern Rock and such legends as Lynyrd Skynyrd or The Allman Brothers, then newcomers BLACKBERRY SMOKE are a band you simply will love. Their 11 track release titled LITTLE PIECE OF DIXIE features a classic Southern Rock sound that fans will come to cherish. As yet undiscovered by the mainstream, BLACKBERRY SMOKE I believe has a very bright future because their songwriting and musicianship is in a word stellar! Standouts on LITTLE PIECE OF DIXIE include "Good One Comin' On", "Like I Am", "Bottom Of This", "I'd Be Lyin'", "Prayer For The Little Man" and the closer "Freedom Song". But truthfully all eleven tracks are terrific because the songwriting is so damn good! This is a band that should be heard and if you are a Southern Rock fan like me, LITTLE PIECE OF DIXIE is simply a must have release for your collection. I give it a well deserved 5 out of 5 stars with no reservations. ROCK ON, longliveneil

Blackberry Smoke "Litle Piece Of Dixie"

Created: 21/03/11
Heard a cut from this disk on XM and ordered it right up. This is the real evolution of Southern Rock folks. Forget Bo Bice, he's OK, but he ain't no Ronnie Van Zandt. These boys have the big guitar sound and real southern voices, and their songs ring true to their southern/Georgia roots. If you liked the good old days of southern rock, this is like taking a trip in the way back machine to the early 70's when "Pronounced" first hit the airwaves but it's not some mushy, ham handed tribute, it's got good strong legs of it's own and rest asured, it rocks til the cows come home. If this don't get you craving a tall cold one and a hot little dixie chicken, you're dead. If it's real 21st century swamp music you crave, look no further.

Southern Rock Lives

Created: 05/12/10
I have been waiting for a southern band to come along and put together a really great sounding album. I miss the old Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, ARS, and other southern rock bands that have gone through changes due to deaths or in-fighting. Now.... Finally a true southern band that really brings it. Singing about the working man, love for their country and armed forces, family and gettin' drunk. Thats how we roll in the south and Blackberry Smoke has that southern twang all in their music. I love it. I recommend it to anyone that loves to tap their foot and sing along with some really great music. I hope they follow it up soon with another winner.
