Yeomans.Translator: Proinsias O'Maonaigh.Arranger: Dolly Parton. This is the second installment in Dolly Parton's bluegrass album trilogy. Like its predecessor, LITTLE SPARROW finds Parton temporarily eschewing the highly produced pop-country that made her a household name in favor of all-acoustic arrangements that reach back to the earliest days of country. While Parton employs some of bluegrass's hottest pickers here, it's her own soulful but humble singing style and songwriting abilities (her self-penned tunes dominate the album) that impress the most. Equally remarkable is the way she bends decidedly non-bluegrass source material to suit the concept. Cole Porter's "I Get a Kick Out of You" and Collective Soul's "Shine" certainly don't seem like they'd be feasible bluegrass fare, but Parton and company transform them so completely that one almost forgets their origins.

    Another amazing Dolly album!

    Created: 19/06/10
Dolly never fails to amaze, so naturally "Little Sparrow" is a triumph. This was the second in her bluegrass set of albums released between "The Grass Is Blue" and "Halos & Horns". The album has many Parton originals including some new versions of her older songs ["My Blue Tears" and "Down From Dover"]. There are also a few cover songs on the album as well [these include Cole Porter's "I Get A Kick Out of You", Collective Soul's "Shine" {for which she won a Grammy} and Steve Young's "Seven Bridges Road" which was popularized by The Eagles]. There are many great musicians on the album such as the groups Nickel Creek and Altan, Alison Krauss and Dolly's frequent producer Steve Buckingham. Also, the album's cover itself is a great thing to own. The American version of the CD is a digipack that folds out into three sections and has the liner notes as a booklet held in a cut-out of a dark mountain skyline coupled with some very beautiful photos of Dolly. All around this album is spectacular and during its decade in existance it has become a classic. No one should be disappointed with this album. It's a guaranteed purchase. Besides, all of us Dolly fans can't be wrong!

    THE DOLLY-LAMA AT HER BEST

    Created: 02/11/06
MY MOTHER LISTENED TO COUNTRY MUSIC WHEN I WAS GROWING UP AND LITERALLY EVERYONE LOVED DOLLY PARTON. IF YOU ASKED ANYONE ON PLANET EARTH ABOUT AMERICAN COUNTRY AND WESTERN- THEY PROBABLY WILL RELATE THE FACE AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES OF THE LIVING LEGEND DOLLY PARTON.
I BOUGHT DOLLY'S GREATEST HITS AND THOSE OLD FEELINGS CAME BACK, I WAS A YOUNG CHILD AGAIN WONDERING WHAT THE SONGS MEANT BUT THIS TIME AROUND, I KNEW THE MEANING. THE NEXT DAY I BOUGHT LITTLE SPARROW BY DOLLY PARTON.
TO PUT IT MILDLY- IT IS THE BEST CD I EVER PURCHASED. IT IS MUSICAL STORYTELLING AT IT'S BEST. THE TITLE TRACK LITTLE SPARROW BREAKS YOUR HEART AND FOR THE MOST PART, DOLLY KEEPS THAT THEME THROUGH HER SONG-TELLING. BUT THEN YOU LISTEN TO SHINE AND I TRULY BELIEVE THERE IS NOT MANY PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT WOULD NOT BE TOUCHED BY THIS SONG. EVERY SONG IS GREAT ON THE ALBUM BUT THE STANDOUTS ARE SHINE, LITTLE SPARROW, DOWN FROM DOVER, MOUNTAIN ANGEL, MY BLUE TEARS, SEVEN BRIDGES ROAD, BLUER PASTURES AND I GET A KICK OUT OF YOU.I RECENTLY SAW DOLLY IN CONCERT AND SHE SHINED. WHAT A TRUE BLUE AMERICAN CLASSIC. THIS CD WILL MAKE YOU LOVE DOLLY PARTON.

    Powerful

    Created: 08/04/08
This is,without doubt, one of the finest works that Dolly Parton has ever produced. Her voice is as fine an instrument as any Stradivarius ever made, and when it is coupled with voices like Alison Krauss and Rhonda Vincent, and musicians like Jerry Douglas and Chris Thiele, the outcome is nothing short of amazing. There is not a song in this collection that is not a delight to the ears. These voices and these instruments coupled with an astounding selection of songwriters art, become a Masterpiece of Angelic Harmony. I was Blown Away.

    You Can't Beat Dolly

    Created: 13/06/07
Another delightful entry in Dolly Parton's trip back to bluegrass country. Though perhaps not quite on a par with "The Grass Is Blue" (how could it be, with no "Silver Dagger" or "I Am Ready"?), the album is still a joy, as well as a testament to the genuineness of Dolly's vision and the virtuosity of her artistry.
