MTV didn't exist in the early '60s, but the BBC did, and between March 1962 and June 1965 (a period that spans their first four albums and takes them from the simplicity of "Love Me Do" to the complexities of "Ticket To Ride") the Beatles performed 52 times on England's national radio network. Although they had honed their craft in British and German rock clubs, the Beatles were mostly known as a studio band, and the radio shows served as a sort of behind-the-curtains glimpse of the studio wizards. Most of these performances are covers of early rock, pop and country songs, and the scope of them is wider and deeper than the covers the Beatles put on their albums. There are obvious influences--Chuck Berry, Elvis and Little Richard rockers, and traditional pop ballads--along with lesser-known pop footholds that hint at how/where the Beatles bridged the gap between rock's teen-age years and its adulthood. They covered soul singer Arthur Alexander only once on their original records ("Anna"), but twice here, and the combination of R&B drive and complex pop changes that fuels both "Soldier Of Love" and "A Shot Of Rhythm And Blues" gives away one of the primary sources of Beatles style. John Lennon's vocal on "I Just Don't Understand," an Ann-Margret pop song, foreshadows the downbeat folk-rock with which the Beatles made their mark in the mid-'60s.A baker's dozen of Lennon/McCartney originals are spread through the set, including one, a jangly folk-rocker titled "I'll Be On My Way," that they never recorded. The John-Paul-George harmonies are in full bloom, as is the Beatlesque sense of humor. There's one terribly obvious overdub, but the rest of LIVE AT THE BBC sounds like rock'n'roll's greatest living-room sessions.

THE BEATLES . . . DO I REALLY NEED TO SAY MORE . . .

Created: 05/02/09
LIVE AT THE BBC IS AS FAB AS THE FAB 4. THIS IS A GREAT COMPILATION. THIS CD IS A MUST 4 EVERY BEATLES FAN. EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE IT IN THEIR COLLECTION. JUST TAKE YOURSELF BACK TO WHEN THIS WAS ACTUALLY BEING BROADCAST LIVE ON BBC RADIO. MAN I WISH I WAS THEIR ROCK'N & ROLL'N TO THESE GREAT TUNES. TO ME THE BEATLES WERE A GIFT FROM GOD. THEY BROUGHT SO MUCH HAPPINESS TO ME PERSONALLY AND TO BILLIONS OF PEOPLE ACCROSS THE UNIVERSE. THEY ARE 2ND TO NONE. THEY HAVE MORE MILESTONES IN THEIR CAREERS THAN JUST ABOUT ANY OTHER MUSICAL GROUP IN HISTORY. SO DO YOURSELF A FAVOR & PURCDHASE THIS CD. I KNOW YOU WON'T REGRET IT. ANOTHER NAME FOR THIS CD COULD'VE BEEN LIVE AT THE BBC "NAKED" SIMILAR TO THE GENIUS WORK PAUL DID ON LET IT BE NAKED. I'M SURE YOU'LL LIKE THAT ONE TOO. WHAT I LOVE ABOUT HALF.COM IS THAT THEY DO HAVE A GREAT SELECTION AT ANY ONE TIME OF BEATLES MUSIC. I SHOP AT HALF.COM OR EBAY BEFORE I GO PURCHASE MY BEATLES MUSIC / MOVIES / MEMORBILA... WHAT I DON'T LIKE ABOUT HALF.COM OR SHALL I SAY I HATE IS THAT THE DESCRIPTIONS ARE SO BRIEF. I FEEL THE SELLERS OF THESE ITEMS SHOULD TAKE A LITTLE MORE TIME IN DESCRIBING THE PRODUCT. BE MORE SPECIFIC AND TAKE SOME TIME SO YOU CAN GET MORE SALES. BY THE WAY I DID GET A CHANCE TO SEEN PAUL IN PHOENIX, ARIZONA & RINGO IN ROSEMONT, ILLINOIS. WHAT A TREAT, TWO OF THE BEST IF NOT THE BEST CONCERTS I HAVE EVER SEEN. OF COURSE IF THEY WILL BE PERFORMING IN A CITY NEAR YOU OR NOT GO SEE THEM IN CONCERT, I REPEAT GO SEE PAUL & RINGO IN CONCERT. AND YES I DID READ A FEW DAY'S AGO THE WHEN THEY CAN ACCOMIDATE THEIR SCHEDULE PAUL & RINGO WILL BE PERFORMING AGAIN. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE HOW WONDERFUL IT WOULD HAVE BEEN TO SEE JOHN & GEORGE TOO. I THINK THAT IF I WOULD HAVE SEEN THEM ALL TOGETHER AS THE BEATLES. I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN ALL TEARY EYED LIKE THOSE CHICKS AT THEIR CONCERTS. I WOULD HAVE ALSO LIKED TO HAVE SEEN STU & PETE PERFORMING WITH THE BEATLES. MAY STU, JOHN, GEORGE & LINDA REST IN PEACE ETERNALLY. I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANKS TO CYNTHIA LENNON, YOKO ONO, AND OLIVIA HARRISON, FOR HELPING JOHN & GEORGE BECOME THE GREAT MEN THAT THEY BECAME. THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ MY REWIEW. P.S.CONGRADULATIONS TO PRESIDENT OBAMA! P.S.S. ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE... THNAKS VERY MUCH FOR READING MY REVIEW, bbuncle THU 5 FEB 09, NW ILLINOIS, USA :O)

You musst own this CD

Created: 13/10/09
This is a great CD. Yes it is Mono. Yes, they are live proformances. This is what the Beatles were without all the hype and commercial trappings. Just try and think of a group with as much individual talent ( none of this Supergroup stuff either). Everyone of them sings lead. Everyone of them write music. These guys didn't just show up one day in 1962. They had been playing togather for years before fame. This CD shows how well they fit togather - knew each other. The range of material on this CD remarkable - Rockabilly, country, rhythm and blues, and old standards. If you are older than 55, you must own this CD.

The fab four invade America, 30 years later!

 | Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.
Created: 10/09/11
In 1994, 30 years after the Beatles first arrived on American soil, the 30th anniversary of this historic milestone was realised with the release of the double-disc set "Live At The BBC", a unique chapter in Beatles history. Included are brief snippets of spoken dialogue mixed together with a rare treasure trove of classic music - nearly 30 of these songs were never recorded by the group at a proper EMI session, being issued here for the first time. All tracks were aired only on BBC radio broadcasts in the UK, from 1963 to 1965. What is amazing about this album is the significant number of cover tunes they performed which are only available here. Songs from Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, the Coasters, Arthur Alexander, Elvis Presley, the Shirelles, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Little Eva, Carl Perkins, Larry Williams, Lenny Welch, The Miracles and The Crickets, among others, are well represented in this album, showing a musically diversified area of the Beatles as a superb cover band by paying tribute to other artists that, no doubt, inspired them in the first place. Only one cover song - Carl Perkins' "Lend Me Your Comb" - was not issued in this album, although it should have been. Of course, they also performed recordings of their own material for the BBC: "Thank You Girl", "I Saw Her Standing There", "Can't Buy Me Love", "I Wanna Be Your Man", "All My Loving", "Things We Said Today", "She's A Woman", "I Feel Fine", "I'm A Loser", "Ticket To Ride" and "Love Me Do" are all given first-rate treatment. There is a special version of "Honey Don't" with lead vocals by John Lennon. And, what a thrill it is to actually have the first real Beatles song ("I'll Be On My Way") available after so many years. Subsequently, "Live At The BBC" was Grammy nominated for Best Historical Album, but did not win. "Live At The BBC" is a perfect example of the enduring legacy of the Beatles, presenting them with a very special chapter in the history of their stellar career. It is a definitive "must-have" album for Beatles fans of all ages.

The joy of listening

Created: 02/05/11
This recording features, as the title says, live performances at the BBC. To me, it shows the Beatles during a growth stage. There are moments where "the band is not quite right", a line from "Only a Northern Song" (another Beatles tune). It shows a lighter side of the fab four. Not everything is pristine and perfect. But I believe in those early days, the joy and love of music shines through and is captured on the recording for us to enjoy as well.
