Album Notes
This 1977 live album from the seminal hard-rocking girlband The Runaways boasts "You Drive Me Wild" and "All Right You Guys" among its 12 cuts.Personnel: Joan Jett, Lita Ford (vocals, guitar); Sandy West (vocals, drums).Audio Mixers: Takashi Kitazawa; Kent J. Smythe.Liner Note Authors: Iain McNay; Kim Fowley.Recording information: Shibuya Kokaido (06/05/1977/06/12/1977); Shibuya Kokaido, Japan (06/05/1977/06/12/1977); Tokyo Koseinenkin Kaikan (06/05/1977/06/12/1977).Photographers: Akiyoshi Miyashita; Niva Bringas; Weekly Heibon.Because the Runaways were much better known in Japan than the U.S., it stands to reason that their only live album was recorded in that country. This hard to find LP was available in the U.S. only as a Japanese import and sold for around ten to 12 dollars, which was a lot to pay for vinyl in the late '70s. But American Runaways fans who were willing to make that investment found a lot to admire about the album, which boasted superior sound quality (by '70s standards) and explosive, uninhibited versions of "You Drive Me Wild," "Cherry Bomb," "California Paradise," and other hard rock pearls. The original Runaways lineup (Joan Jett, Cherie Currie, Lita Ford, Jackie Fox, and Sandy West) was still in place, and the rockers' primary focus is on material from The Runaways and Queens of Noise. Holding nothing back, Ford is at her most metallic. Except for a handful of bootlegs, Live in Japan is the only documentation of the Runaways on stage. ~ Alex Henderson

¿Perhaps the very best from an era of classic rock live albums. Includes essential tracks `I Wonder Where The Boys Are¿ and `All Right You Guys¿, not on the studio LPs¿ Robert Coyne, Rock, The Rough Guide. Originally not released in the UK or US, Live In Japan was recorded in 1977 during the girls sold out arena tour! The Runaways had become genuine superstars in Japan and this album boasts superior sound quality (by '70s standards) and explosive, uninhibited versions of "You Drive Me Wild," "Cherry Bomb," "California Paradise," and other hard rock pearls. With the line up still the same, just before Jackie and then Cherrie were to leave the band the girls were on top form, making this one of the best live rock albums of the 1970s! Except for a handful of bootlegs, Live in Japan is the only documentation of the Runaways on stage!

Live in Japan by The Runaways

Created: 21/10/10
The Runaways were one of my favorite bands when I was a teenager in the '70's. As a young guitar player, I was always searching for new, guitar-oriented bands. My main focus were bands like Kiss, ZZ Top, Black Sabbath, Peter Frampton, BTO, REO and such. Back then, Linda Ronstadt was considered the "Queen of Rock" but actually, she was far from it. I realized this when I heard the Queens of Noise for the first time! Imagine my surprise when I found out the band was not only all female, but also my age. I still have all my albums from back then. I never saw this one in the record store back in the day but seeing the new Runaways movie prompted me to look on Ebay for Runaways items. That is when I saw the live cd which I had heard about but never actually heard. This cd did not disappoint me in any way! These girls are true rockers and it's very cool to hear Joan Jett and Lita Ford live in this early stage of their careers. There is no way to know if it was re-worked very much in the studio or not but regardless, it is a very solid live recording and would be a great addition to any rock collection.
