Album Notes
NEIL YOUNG: LIVE AT MASSEY HALL 1971 captures a Toronto show by one of Canada's most beloved rock stars. The seventeen song setlist includes renditions of "Ohio," "Down By the River," and "Helpless."

Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, guitar, piano).Recording information: Massey Hall, Toronto, Ontario, Canada (01/19/1971).Authors: Victor Stanton; Jack Batten.Editor: Toshi Onuki.Photographers: Ben Johnson ; Wim Van Der Linden; Toshi Onuki; Joel Bernstein.Bob Dylan once famously remarked about hearing Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" on the radio that he knew his days as the man of the hour were numbered. Fact is, Young is the only guy who can even reasonably compete with Dylan for the title of rock's greatest songwriter, and while "Dylan in the '60s" has long been a cliched assessment of an undeniable rock hot streak, so too has become "Neil Young in the '70s." While Dylan has long culled material from his archive, Young has been reluctant to do the same. He's now joining the fray full force with LIVE AT MASSEY HALL 1971--the second live release in an ongoing series from Young's legendarily deep vaults. The performance comes between the release of AFTER THE GOLDRUSH and HARVEST and hot on the heels of DEJA VU, basically the last time Young's eminently enthralling man-child persona of "I Am A Child" and "Helpless" held sway over the obstinate, electric crank of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT and RUST NEVER SLEEPS. The set is pure magic. Young still seems humble and shy, a guy who stumbled across an incredible gift for melody but possessed the worldliness to let his awkward talent breathe and warble as it was meant to.Familiar songs have drastically different readings: the subdued "A Man Needs A Maid" comes off here as more of a cry for help than the potentially chauvinistic enigma on HARVEST and seeps perfectly into "Heart of Gold;" while the normally heavy "Cowgirl in the Sand" and "Ohio" are remade as acoustic dirges. The true treasures, however, are the never-released gems "Bad Fog of Loneliness" and "Dance Dance Dance," a song--with its lyrics of love and rainbows--that foregrounds Young's latent whimsy and sets up "I Am A Child" as the perfect closer for this disc. A must for fans of Young, '70s singer-songwriters, and rock in general, LIVE AT MASSEY HALL 1971 perfectly captures the moment just before Dylan's prophecy came true and Young took over pop music.

Editorial Reviews
The brief but pointed renditions of 'Cowgirl In The Sand' and 'Down By The River' included here have more emotional heft than the amped up, anthemic renditions on the Fillmore set.
No Depression

[Some tracks] benefit from the simplicity of the setting: 'A Man Needs a Maid', for one, comes to life without all of the studio version's orchestral gloop.
Entertainment Weekly

4 stars out of 5 -- [T]here is a striking vigor to Young's high, eccentric singing -- and a surprising nostalgia in the fond references to his homeland in 'Helpless'...

24 and there's so much more

Neil Young in his grungey prime - performing LIVE at Massey Hall. 1971. Age 24. A beautifully remastered CD and DVD of Neil Young unplugged long before MTV coined the term. Neil performs much of the Harvest Album solo on a darkened stage in his native Canada. Switching between several vintage Martin guitars and a Steinway piano, Neil performs his haunting music with passion and artistry. His Young voice is strong and clear. His flatpicking guitar work inspired. Drop-D tuning never sounded so good, as Neil re-tunes his guitars between each song.

Audiophile sonic quality in both the cd and dvd. The acoustics of this intimate stage were beautifully captured from the original recording. The Mixing of voice, instrument, and crowd are among the very best live recordings I have ever heard. You can feel the bronzed acoustic strings slapping and bending across well-worn steel frets. You feel the strain as Neil reaches for a high note. Album highlights include memorable renditions of: Old Man, Ohio, Needle and the Damage Done, Cowgirl in the Sand, Down by the River, and a lovely medley of A Man needs a Maid & Heart of Gold performed on piano.

The DVD is artistically filmed by mixing still photographs with actual concert footage and a recurring vision of a vintage reel-to-reel tape player spinning its reels in front of a microphone. The filmmakers ironic imagery suggests the origin of this wonderful soundtrack. Neil is captured in the full glory of his youth. Long stringy black hair covering most of his face as he performs from a quiet seated posture. It feels as though Neil is performing for you in his own living room. The DVD is dark and almost film-noir in its grainy newsreel quality. Despite the obvious limitations of the archived film clips, the tight close-ups of Neil performing are emotionally moving. The passion of this young genius is palpable as he pours himself into each of his musical creations.

I cannot help but see a haunting resemblance between sight and sound of Neil at Massey Hall in 1971 and Kurt Cobain's unplugged performance on an MTV stage 30 years later. A talent worthy of imitation. A talent worthy of this beautiful reprise of his early work.

A Masterpiece

Created: 18/11/08
The CD alone is worth the buy. With early versions of classic songs, such as "Old Man" and a clip of "Heart of Gold" within the song "Man Needs a Maid" (4:30 into the song). The DVD is as any Neil Young fan would expect, a typical Neil acoustic performance - sitting down singing, with a few video clips added in.

A true masterpiece done in Toronto's Massey Hall, which probably looked the same in 1971 as it does today in 2008 - just with more history now. The sound in the Hall is outstanding and a true, and serious masterpiece.

Another Masterpiece

Neil Young never ceases to amaze me, and the old stuff like that presented in the Massey Hall release just proves that he is a master of his craft and always has been. Live at Massey Hall is a snapshot into the ease and simplicity that is Neil Young at his best. We are lucky such tapes exist and each release is a gem.

My personal thanks to Mr. Young and the production staff for giving us such as sonic wonder. The 5.1 sound on the DVD is amazing. It makes you feel like Neil is playing just for you in your own living room.

A great disc and a must for any Neil Young collection. If you don't have 5.1 sound don't spend the extra money for the DVD, the cd is great alone.

I can never get tired of it!

I have always enjoyed Neil Young but especially like this CD because it is such pure music. Nothing fancy, no gimmicks. Just a man and his guitar. My brother used to sit and tune his guitar like Neil does on this CD. Another brother of mine came over one night while I had the CD on and stayed until it was over. He said the same thing, "It doesn't get much better than this!"

I have been looking for this CD and bonus I got a DVD also. Now, my best friend wants one too. I had lost this CD or it got ruined -- I was turned onto it while on a plane trip. Then I ordered one off ebay and it came blank -- a case with no CD. I was bummed. I'm happy now. It's a great collection and I highly recommend it to any music lover. neil Young rocks
