Album NotesPersonnel includes: George Jones, Alan Jackson, The Jones Boys.Once you get past the introduction (an entirely unnecessary endorsment from Alan Jackson) and the cheesy self-aggrandizing theme song ("No Show Jones"), LIVE WITH THE POSSUM offers latter-day Jones in fine form, turning in superlative performances (he's capable of nothing less) of some of his best-known songs. Personnel and recording info are conspicuously absent, but the tunes all appear to be taken from a single late-'90s show in Knoxville, TN. Jones revisits his early years with a playful, energetic version of "The Race Is On." Mid-career, Jones made a splash with James Taylor's honky-tonk ballad "Bartender's Blues," which is delivered with maximum poignance here.Jones' hit ballad "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes" casts a nostalgic eye toward his generation's country music icons, and he invests with the proper amount of heart-touching emotion. One can only hope that Jones doesn't believe Alan Jackson to be the answer to the titular question. A medley of Jones classics including the devotional "I'll Share My World With You" and the heartbreak tour de force "The Grand Tour," is a natural crowd-pleaser, but as these performances prove, the George Jones of the '90s is still as vital an artist as ever.
