/Big Brother & The Holding Company.Big Brother & The Holding Company : Janis Joplin (vocals); Sam Andrews,David Gurley (guitar, background vocals); Peter Albin (bass, background vocals); David Getz (drums, background vocals).Recorded live at The Winterland, San Francisco, California on April 12 & 13, 1968.Includes liner notes by Dave Getz, Sam Andrew, Beng Fong-Torres, Jaan Uhelszki, Ann Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Meredith Brooks, Deborah Harry, Kim Gordon, Amy Ray, Joan Jett, Chrissie Hynde, Stevie Nicks.Personnel: Janis Joplin (vocals); James Gurley, Sam Andrew (vocals, guitar); David Getz (vocals, drums); Peter Albin (vocals).Audio Mixer: Vic Anesini.Liner Note Authors: Chrissie Hynde; David Getz; Debbie Harry; Joan Jett; Kim Gordon; Meredith Brooks; Amy Ray; Ann Wilson; Sam Andrew; Stevie Nicks.Recording information: Winterland Ballroom (04/12/1968-04/13/1968).Photographers: Jim Marshall ; Baron Wolman; Bill Brach. This concert recording finds Janis Joplin and Big Brother returning to San Francisco upon completing a triumphant East Coast tour that found acts such as B.B. King and Albert King opening for them, Big Brother were hailed as conquering heroes prior to their hitting the studio to record what would become CHEAP THRILLS. At the center of it all was Janis Joplin, a raw-throated Texan whose love of Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith was channeled through her music every night.More than a mere lover of the blues, Joplin amply displayed her impressive range as she crooned her way through the standard "Summertime," poured her soul into Erma Franklin's "Piece Of My Heart" and belted out folkie Mark Spoelstra's "Magic Of Love." Whether in the traded vocals of Joplin and guitarist James Gurley on "Easy Rider" or the chugging insistency of "Combination Of The Two," LIVE AT WINTERLAND '68 perfectly demonstrates the fluid synergy between Joplin's singing and Big Brother's brand of acid-rock, capturing the intensity that this impressive unit carried through the two sets that make up this disc.

    Editorial Reviews
Joplin fans won't find any forgotten gems on this famous, beautifully recorded performance, but Big Brother, thrillingly raw and raunchy, emerges as one of the most unjustifiably maligned bands of the era... - Rating: B+

    Psychedelic Blues Classic

    Created: 04/04/08
Janis Joplin was first and foremost a blues singer and she gets a good energetic workout here. Big Brother was moreso quite a decent psychedelic band in their own rite, very acidy summer of love, but bluezy too. They provide good support, this makes for an interesting Joplin set, and they get a good crack at some very good psychedelic tunes and solos of their own. I believe this may have been a 1968 reunion concert, but no matter, both were in full stride and worked great together when they clicked, like they do here. The sound is excellent. This is the much better of the two live Big Brother era Janis discs kicking around, the other is from 1966, they were still working out their routine and the sound quality is much more tinny, thin souding, pretty much just bootleg quality. Go for this one instead unless you are a die hard collector (like me!;-) and must have both! It's a great listen!

    Janis Joplin-Live At Winterland

    Created: 30/07/08
This cd From Janis Joplin that she did live in 1968, was released in 1998, and is excellent. I do not see this too often at the cd stores around here. I mainly just see her studio albums out, which happens with numerous other artists' live albums, except Kiss, who emphasize live albums. If you want to complete your Janis Joplin collection woth a good live cd, this is the one to get.
