Product description

Synopsis
In 2005, Marcus Luttrell and his four-man Navy SEAL team were in the mountains along the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan hunting down a dangerous al Qaeda leader. The mission, Operation Redwing, suddenly came into jeopardy when they stumbled into a group of goat herders. They had two choices: kill the unarmed men, a violation of the rules of engagement, or let them go, risking discovery. Luttrell voted to let them go--a decision he has regretted ever since. Soon the team was surrounded by 80-100 al Qaeda warriors and not only did Luttrell's comrades die, but a quick-response helicopter carrying 16 other soldiers was also shot down. Luttrell himself was badly wounded, but managed to crawl seven miles to a Pustan village, where the villagers, obeying their ancient customs of hospitality, and risking a massacre at the hands of al Qaeda, hid Luttrell and nursed him back to health. In his best-selling memoir, Luttrell tells the harrowing account of the worst disaster in Navy SEAL history and his own miraculous survival.

Publisher's Note
On a clear night in late June 2005, four U.S. Navy SEALs left their base in northern Afghanistan for the mountainous Pakistani border. Their mission was to capture or kill a notorious al Qaeda leader known to be ensconced in a Taliban stronghold surrounded by a small but heavily armed force. Less then twenty-four hours later, only one of those Navy SEALs remained alive.

This is the story of fire team leader Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of Operation Redwing, and the desperate battle in the mountains that led, ultimately, to the largest loss of life in Navy SEAL history. But it is also, more than anything, the story of his teammates, who fought ferociously beside him until he was the last one left-blasted unconscious by a rocket grenade, blown over a cliff, but still armed and still breathing. Over the next four days, badly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell fought off six al Qaeda assassins who were sent to finish him, then crawled for seven miles through the mountains before he was taken in by a Pashtun tribe, who risked everything to protect him from the encircling Taliban killers.

A six-foot-five-inch Texan, Leading Petty Officer Luttrell takes us, blow-by-blow, through the brutal training of America's warrior elite and the relentless rites of passage required by the Navy SEALs. He transports us to a monstrous battle fought in the desolate peaks of Afghanistan, where the beleaguered American team plummeted headlong a thousand feet down a mountain as they fought back through flying shale and rocks. In this rich , moving chronicle of courage, honor, and patriotism, Marcus Luttrell delivers one of the most powerful narratives ever written about modern warfare-and a tribute to his teammates, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Lone Survivor

Created: 15/03/10
This is the best book that I have ever read, ever. It is about a Navy SEAL and three other SEALS that are on a covert mission in Afghanistan. Once you get started, you will not put the book down. What these MEN did, and what they endured will send shivers through your bones. Truly well written. I recommend it to anyone interested in a true story of four real life heroes. Bravo to Marcus Luttrell and his brave companions...

A Learning Experience

Created: 02/01/10
I've heard some of the tale of the author's experience on his last mission so I was motivated to get "the rest of the story" and read the book myself.
It was an interesting read throughout though, If you have military experience as I have, the pages about his boot camp training could be skimmed.
The majority of the book deals with the actual mission during which the author became the "Lone Survivor" and taught me a great deal about the Afghan society; at least the part he came in contact with as well as how Seals operate in the field.
There was one aspect that saddened me. My military experience taught me that no matter what service one is in, it is not a democracy. May I offer one bit of advice, whether you decide to read the book or not: Understand that officers are paid to make decisions, not call for a vote in life-or-death situations.
Nevertheless, I highly recommend the book.

A True American Hero

Created: 11/07/08
This without doubt is one of the best Stories I've ever read in regards to a True American Hero. That term "Hero" is over used these days, but in the case of Marcus Luttrell it could not be more fitting. Its all about Selflessness and Duty, Honor, Country. These are things the Liberal left will never understand or appreciate. Marcus Luttrell is a prime example of the kind of Manhood that can only be found in the US Military today, you wont find it on Wall Street, you wont find it in the NFL, NBA and you most certainly will not find it in Hollywood or the Democrat dominated US Congress/Senate. His evaluation of the Liberal Press is dead on. Liberals today are the Most dangerous people on the Planet, they fancying themselves as Intellectuals. Well a little knowledge is a dangerous thing and Liberals prove this everyday. God Bless Marcus Luttrell, his Teammates, the US Navy Seals and the US Military in general...

Great Book

Created: 08/05/08
This is one of the greatest purchases of a book I have ever made. I loved the book immensely. It is well written, inspiring, makes me proud to be an American and proud of our fighting men and women! A book of valor, uncommon courage, decision making, and character. The decision NOT to kill the shepherds was virtual suicide but was the right thing to do, just wrong for the SEALs. I love to read how character overcomes personal preservation, and this book tells it for real. Highly recommended for anyone who dares to see what it is really like to be an American hero. One lives, many die, but all were heros in my eyes. Language is a little vulgar at times, but such is life.

Very gripping. Story brings you in from the word go.

Created: 12/11/08
This book is very descriptive and all-encompassing. It gives you a detailed account of what a soldier training to be a SEAL goes through, from the emotions to the physical labor involved. The author grabs your attention from the very beginning. As the story progresses, you grow attached to the characters and feel the emotions and pain that they go through. It describes the grimy details of war and the mind-set of a persistent enemy. The things that these men go through is more than most people go through in a lifetime. The author very accurately brings you up and back down and everywhere in between through the emotional prism. Anyone looking for a depiction of what is going on behind enemy lines in Afghanistan and Pakistan, this is a must read. I couldn't put it down. I read it in one session.
