Lonesome Dove
Created: 10/03/11
One of the all-time best & greatest Western saga's ever to move from book form to film,as a series, that follows two Texas Rangers from HOT & DUSTY Texas,to the green & fertile state of Montana to start a ranch. Both Robert Duvall,Tommy Lee Jones,Danny Glover & Rick Shroeder(and the rest of this cast)put in stellar performances that will will be remembered over the years! This most definately has become a true "Western Classic" and will remain so...

I'm very much a movie buff and have been since the late 1940's.
In my opinion "Lonesome Dove" is certainly the best thing i've seen
come from television. Robert Duvall is at his best and Tommy Lee Jones
is about as good as they come. Actually the entire cast was outstanding.
I never got bored watching this movie. I bought the new widesreen version
off Ebay and I'm planning to watch it tonight so I can compare the two versions.
Whether you're a western fan or not I promise you good entertainment with
this movie.

still sitting above the others...

I'm from Texas originally and a fan of the prairie. In my opinion, this is still the best western on the market. Duval & Jones are endearing and convincing in their roles. Excellent story line and plenty of authenticity to appreciate. It won't flash as much as much of what's being made today, but it's really hard to beat Duval in this kind of role and the dialogue is peerless. A couple of examples:
"Well we don't rent pigs and I figure it's better to say it right out front because a man that does like to rent pigs is... he's hard to stop."
"Well the first man comes along that can read Latin is welcome to rob us, far as I'm concerned. I'd like a chance t' shoot at a educated man once in my life."
Priceless! I STILL recommend it without reservation.
If you want further enjoyment, The Return to Lonesome Dove is a decent film (though many actors are different) and Comanche Moon is worth your time. I'll bet a silver dollar Karl Urban and Steve Zahn studied Duval and Jones to play their younger roles and they do an excellent job.

An excellent mini series. A classic. This is not your typical western. Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones are great in this series. Happy to find it on DVD...

A classic western, now even more enhanced!

Lonesome Dove was one of televsion's great mini-series, but was created before widescreen HDTV televisions, and Dolby surround sound. This reissue solves both points, judiciously cropped from 4:3 to 16:9 format. Some may object that parts of the images are missing, but I felt that the cropping was professionally done and did not effect the power of the film. The 5.1 surround sound is an added bonus, adding enhanced realism. The color and sharpness of the transfer to DVD is excellent. So, saddle up to your home theater and enjoy a great western experience!
