    Product description

    Synopsis
Hard rock's favorite whipping boy's tell-all autobiography is a surprisingly candid and well-written confessional of Marilyn Manson's deprived youth, his depraved teenage years, and how, much like Alice Cooper a generation before him, he turned a variety of childhood traumas to his advantage in constructing a rock & roll persona that audiences could either hate with abandon or adopt as one of their own. Backstage tour descriptions are all you'd expect, from sado-masochistic set-pieces with fans to copious drug use and voodoo dabblings, but there are also the more mundane rituals of battles with the record label to get band-approved songs on the album. Our hero gets himself into some pretty shady moral and ethical situations with fans and friends along the way, leading one to ruminate that while Alice Cooper was detached enough from his persona to spend his days off playing rounds of golf, Manson may have disturbingly swallowed his own nihilistic, against God, religion, and whatever-else-you've-got philosophy hook, line, and sinker. Great fun for teens into their first phase of devil-worship, THE LONG HARD ROAD OUT OF HELL still carries enough venom to scare the wits out of their parents. Which may well be the point.

    Publisher's Note
Discusses the life and influences of the gothic/death metal musician, and includes a tour diary from his band's controversial "Dead to the World" tour

From the worlds most controversial rock star comes his shocking, confessional and revealing life story. In The Long Hard Road Out of Hell, Marilyn Manson candidly and vividly recounts his metamorphosis from a frightened Christian schoolboy into the most feared and revered celebrity in America.A cross-dressing grandfather, a sexually abusive neighbor, a brainwashing faith healer and a schoolteacher searching for satanic messages in rock songs are only a few of the characters who populate his bizarre childhood. From backstage to jail cells, from recording studios to emergency rooms, from the pit of despair to the top of the charts, The Long Hard Road Out of Hell chronicles Mansons rise to fame at the price of his humanity and his descent through the circles of Dante's Inferno: Lust, Violence and Treachery. His story is illustrated with dozens of previously unpublished photographs, and it features a behind-the-scenes account of his headline-grabbing Dead to the World Tour -- vilified, banned and protested by politicans, preachers and parents alike. In his 29 years, Manson has experienced more than most people have -- or would want to -- in a lifetime.

Marilyn Manson - Individual, Hypocrite, Rockstar

    Created: 12/01/11
    - The message I got most out of Marilyn Manson’s autobiography (up to 1997 or the Antichrist Superstar tour years) is, ‘yes I’m obscene, yes I’m depraved and yes I hate myself and others but everything I do I do with purpose, even if that purpose is self-destruction’. Manson holds no secrets back; from being molested as a child from a neighbor, his grandfather’s strange sexual proclivities to his rampant cocaine use, Manson truly seems to be a person without personal boundaries or secrets. Yet he himself wonders what made him so different from his “normal” white Ohio bred family. The answer is really never made clear and is in some ways more opiate than when one starts reading his book. What is clear is that Manson is a tremendously creative and intelligent individual bent on an egotistical drive to bring his message of forcing people to think and reject institutions of society namely Christianity. In this way, Manson pisses off a lot of people as intended and even revels in the fact that some Christian communities sees him as a direct threat. While Mason does make very good points about societal hypocrisies and the lies we are forced to live in, Manson the writer becomes slightly off-putting in the last third of his book in which he points the finger back upon himself and brings forward his own hypocrisies regarding “cliché” his drug use and need of other people for support which is counter to his aggressive message of individuality. He then makes no apology or reason for this incongruity and ends the book somewhat abruptly and distantly by printing sections of a tour diary along with fake Christian affidavits attesting to Manson being a rapist, murderer and into bestiality. So yes, while Mason is an individual in every sense of the word, in order to get his message out there he admits to his need to become a part of the American culture he so loaths in order to turn the dagger back upon itself. This appears to be a hypocrisy in every sense of the word, though I think Manson would argue that at least he choose his in comparison to the dogma and crushing authority of organized religion. Overall a gripping if not disturbing read, not for the faint of heart or uneasy of stomach. I definitely would be interested in an extended autobiography later in life of with Manson reflecting on his ideas that he wrote at age 29. 4 out of 5 stars, one of the best rock bios I’ve read (I suspect much help by co-author Neil Strauss) but feels underdeveloped towards the end.

The Shock Rock Master Tells It All

    Created: 03/09/07
This is a no holds barred story of the life of the King of Shock Rock. Marilyn Manson himself takes you through the up and down roller coaster ride of drug addiction, the life of a SuperStar, and as He clearly states many times "The Long Hard Road Out Of Hell". This story of his life, will keep you reading non-stop from cover to cover. I've read it literally over 30 times and never get tired of it. You will be amazed at the shocking truths he reveals in this fast paced thriller better known as his lfe. From the first pageg to the last you will laugh, cry, and yes, even struggle to hold back vomit, along side him. This is not, I repeat, NOT for the faint of heart. But it is Definitely for the true fans of Mr. Marilyn Manson himself. Even those that hate him, ought to take a day out to learn what makes this human tick. So give Manson, and yourself, a break and learn the truths behind the man before you judge him. I listened to his music for YEARS without fully understanding what fueled his lyrics and message. Once I read this book I TRULY learned how to appreciate his music and life, and his message behind the lyrics themselves. You will too!

    An Artistic Genius ~

    Created: 04/03/08
Understand the ambivalent insight into the world of Marilyn Manson , Growing up in a not so saintly household with all the smoke and mirrors of an indecent, bewildering and confusing childhood, Marilyn Manson puts retrospect onto his predisposition of living with a religeously immoral conflictive family upbringing which in many ways paved the way for Marilyn Mansons career as an artist. With a bit of sarcasm and a bit of humor no doubt Marilyn Manson portrays himself as himself. As an artist he is Genius/Exhibitionist taking the confines of explicit indecency and making morality a martyr in a so-called form called deformagraphy, that which is morally displeasing to the eye is poetically pleasing for the heart, soul or spirit, Defacing the value of modern ideals and exacting a shocking revenge for the illsuitedness that many ideals have. With journalism at the heart of Marilyn Manson he still gives his audience one of the best abilties life can offer which is the ability to be critical in thinking and activist with our moral foundations. "The Best Medicne Is The Worst Tasting!"
The insight into Marilyn Mansons life no doubt shows us that the values some of us uphold do directly influence who we will be or where out paths may guide us. Marilyn Mansons career has interestingly enough almost divinely set itself up for the making of the Anti-Christ Superstar a great anthem for struggeling generations and generations to come. There is no doubt that Marilyn Mansons life is an open book constantly being written with each of his expressive forms giving new poetic revelation to a nation starving for richness and diversity in the alternate creative form.

Well packaged...A little slow on shipping but worth it.

    Created: 05/10/07
This is an insanely good book. It's a very in-your-face story that deals with alot of sad, sick, twisted, free and humorous life issues. Marilyn Manson truly is a product of the environment he was exposed to. Having said that, it shows me that he is not his own person; having lacked the confidence growing up to find himself; but instead he has taken all the different personality traits of those around him and created the person that he is. And it seems that he has taken all the strangest personality traits at that. I think it's very well written and when I got it in the mail I put down my current book and started reading it instantly.
I bought the book because I wanted to know more about Marilyn Manson and what could have possibly made him like he is. I certainly know now and I feel no judgement towards him. It's a real eye-opener into a world that most people don't even READ about much less live in. I was torn between being disgusted and being excited by this look into such a lifestyle. I had a very difficult time putting it down.

    Great book about Marilyn

It is very interesting to hear about his childhood and teenage years in his own words. Gives you a good idea why he turned out the way he did. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Manson and his music.
