The title song is an exception; over a stark, guitar-driven backing (much harder and more alternative-sounding than Browne had ever previously attempted), the singer meditates on what he sees as hollowness in America's soul (with harmony vocal courtesy of ALLY MCBEAL singing star Vonda Shepard).Elsewhere, there's a Dylan-esque ode to Browne's struggling years, and an attack on big media, "Information Overload," with a worldbeat feel. Other highlights are an extremely hooky pop song ("I'm the Cat"), and an uplifting reggae tune, "It is One," bemoaning the world's lack of unity.

...Beneath that preternaturally pretty exterior, we're finding, is a core of stubborn creativity...he's a shrewed craftsman who industriously seeks, and finds, ways to mirror his open-eyed passage through life. In his last album, he had to tell us he was alive; here, he proves it. - Rating: A-

3 Stars - Good - ...Browne delivers earnest, graceful roots pop that's in keeping with the direction his music has been going since the '70s...

i have always been a big jackson browne fan, i had bought this cd when it first came out, at the same time that i had bought a cd player, well the new cd player ate the cd, after a few years i was trying to build my JB collection back up, so when i bought it, it was the first time i really heard this cd i was amazed, it was not what i thought it would be, it was great, the sound was fresh, and the songs sounded like another artist that sounded like JB, from start to finish i couldn't put it away, i still listen to it everyday, i think that if you aren't even a fan you'll enjoy this cd, so if your just hearing the short clips, buy it, you'll be glad you did
