The title song is an exception; over a stark, guitar-driven backing (much harder and more alternative-sounding than Browne had ever previously attempted), the singer meditates on what he sees as hollowness in America's soul (with harmony vocal courtesy of ALLY MCBEAL singing star Vonda Shepard).Elsewhere, there's a Dylan-esque ode to Browne's struggling years, and an attack on big media, "Information Overload," with a worldbeat feel. Other highlights are an extremely hooky pop song ("I'm the Cat"), and an uplifting reggae tune, "It is One," bemoaning the world's lack of unity.
Editorial Reviews...Beneath that preternaturally pretty exterior, we're finding, is a core of stubborn creativity...he's a shrewed craftsman who industriously seeks, and finds, ways to mirror his open-eyed passage through life. In his last album, he had to tell us he was alive; here, he proves it. - Rating: A-Entertainment Weekly (19960216)...Beneath that preternaturally pretty exterior, we're finding, is a core of stubborn creativity....he's a shrewd craftsman who industriously seeks, and finds, ways to mirror his open-eyed passage through life.
