Movie synopsis

Ralph Bakshi's animated adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's revered Middle-earth saga captures the dark mood of the books extraordinarily well. The film covers the first half of the trilogy--THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING and the earlier part of THE TWO TOWERS--as Frodo (voiced by Christopher Guard), the cousin of Bilbo Baggins from THE HOBBIT, is given the all-powerful ring sought by the evil Sauron of Mordor. So begins his adventure, as he must elude Mordor's black riders in an effort to prevent the ring from returning to its owner and thereby signaling the end of Middle-earth. Even with the mighty wizard Gandalf as his ally and faithful friends Merry, Sam, and Pippin by his side, Frodo is still up to his hobbit neck in peril.Bakshi took a big risk when deciding to direct the beloved Tolkien tale, but the resulting work effectively brings Middle-earth to the screen. Bakshi combines painted live-action footage with various styles of animation to create a very unusual collage-style texture for this film. Viewers should be warned that the story ends rather abruptly, leaving room for a sequel that was, unfortunately, never filmed. Still, for fans of fantasy, this moody, atmospheric version of the novels captures the shadowy hues of Tolkien's work in a way that is unique and worth discovering.

If you want the NEW LOTR, this aint it, but still good

with the combination breakthrough ( at the time ) animated live acting, the overly long version that really is 1.6 movies in one, it really is a great film. I SO badly wished they completed this with either 2 more movies, or one long one, but, on JUST what this movie IS< NOT WHAT IT ISNT, it really is a good film. It has engaging characters and plot development. Yes, it kind of cuts itself off at the end, as you really are already into the "Two Towers" book somewhat, but, that aside, I loved this. I saw it on the big screen when it first came out, and was hoping ( alas without hope ) for the sequel(s).
As animated movies go, this is a bit dark, scary for younger viewers, a good deal of gore and blood. a lot of action sequences ( hence the ground breaking animaed live characters ).
They put more of a dark twist on "Stryder" than in the LOTR movies. I didnt read all the books to see if this is more, or less accurate. But, it is still engaging, a good film with enough to keep you glued.
If you liked the Hobbit, this is worth a buy. the other animated hobbit movie(s) are kinda silly Disney-esque style flicks, with hardly any of the seriousness of any of the other films or books. skip those altogether.

It just so cries out for someone with bucks to make the rest of this, which will never happen.

the lord of the rings 2001 dvd (animated)

I bought this dvd because I am a fan of the original books by J.R.R. Tolkien. Unfortunately this was sorely lacking in many areas. The animation starts ok but more often than not, the characters stand around looking stupid. The expressions on their faces are sometimes comical. I also found that the movie stops about half-way through the trilogy somewhere between the two towers and return of the king. The price however was fantastic and is another item for my collection. this is a very much a one time viewing.

LOTR Animated

I purchased this DVD because I love the movies and the books. I ad never seen this version and I was interested. The film does capture the dark tone of the books very well, and the animation is very cool especially since the movie is older. This is a good buy for and LOTR fan, and is an interesting alternative to the movies by Peter Jackson. This film actually served as one of Jackson's inspirations for his films

Magic before Cinematography

This was my first exposure to the JRR TOLKEIN worlds, and I remember seeing these at the theatre. Later as my children grew they too were exposed to the wonderful way Ralph Bashki recreated the world of both the hobbit and the lord of the rings. We still sing "where there is a whip" and "tower of the teeth". Later live action films were good, and in my opinion, even stole certain scenes from Bashki's genius. See this film and make your own opinion. For my family and I, this was an extremely cheap trip back to a happier age. Bashki was brilliant and inovative for his time.

Lord of the rings animated dvd

after i had bought the Hobbit animated, i decided to might as well buy the Lord of the Rings animated too. the movie started out cute and i enjoyed it. But then when it got to the beginning/ middle of the tower towers (this movie is the fellowship and the two towers combined) it started to get a little strange. the movie was confusing and the battle scenes were odd... then the movie seems to just stop and it's over. Although the two towers portion of the movie was strange, the fellowship was very cute and i liked it. I recommend this movie to young children
