    Publisher's Note

Winifred Rudge, a bemused writer struggling to get beyond the runaway success of her mass-market astrology book, travels to London to jump-start her new novel about a woman who is being haunted by the ghost of Jack the Ripper. Upon her arrival, she finds that her stepcousin and old friend John Comestor has disappeared, and a ghostly presence seems to have taken over his home. Is the spirit Winnie's great-great-grandfather, who, family legend claims, was Charles Dickens's childhood inspiration for Ebenezer Scrooge? Could it be the ghostly remains of Jack the Ripper? Or a phantasm derived from a more arcane and insidious origin? Winnie begins to investigate and finds herself the unwilling audience for a drama of specters and shades -- some from her family's peculiar history and some from her own unvanquished past.

In the spirit of A. S. Byatt's Possession, with dark echoing overtones of A Christmas Carol,Lost presents a rich fictional world that will enrapture its readers.

    Haunting The Haunted!

    Created: 01/04/08
I purchased Gregory Maguire's "Lost" because of all the accolades Mr. Maguire received for his other novels, such as "Wicked". In my personal opinion this book was far better than the other four he's written. Furthermore, it was an original...not a pre-existing fairytale made into his own. This book was everything I imagined it to be, and much more.

I've read Wicked and followed it with Son of a Witch and totally loved both books, could hardly put them down. But I gotta tell ya, this is the most boring, mundane, mindless way to spend anyones time is by dragging yourself through this poor excuse of a book. (I couldn't bring myself to call it a novel.) The only reason that I have made it 1/3 of the way through this farce is because I've placed it on the tank of my toilet and there is absolutely nothing in there to read but to force myself to bide my time reading it in hopes that somewhere, somehow it's going to pique my interest. Nope. I will maybe continue to read it, and that is a huge 'maybe'. I had planned on reading a few of his other works that looked promising but I sure won't be chomping at the bit waiting to 'win' the next one and then practically sitting on the front porch waiting just for it's arrival. Nope again. Eventually I may try another from this author. So, if you have the time and the patience to wait for something, anything to interest you in a book...I still wouldn't recomend it. Eh.

This author has a very unique and talented way of putting a new spin on old storys told through the ages. Could not put the book down until it wa done.

I've heard great reviews on this book.

The reason I decided to buy this book is because my son said it was an excellent book to read. He had gotten me two other books. Son of a Witch and Confessions of A Witch...???? Not sure that's the name.

I enjoyed this book very much, the mystery that was happening on top of the main character trying to write a book was very well done. Highly recommend this book
