Movie synopsis

Ray Milland stars as alcoholic writer Don Birnam in Billy Wilder's first unabashedly dramatic film, and one of the first to deal in such painstaking detail with the disease of alcoholism. Don shares an apartment in New York City in the 1940s with his brother Wick (Phillip Terry) who has his hands full trying to deal with his brother's drinking problem. One night, Don encourages his brother to take his girlfriend Helen St. James (Jane Wyman) to hear some music only so that he can be out from under their watchful eyes. Taking the money left for the maid, he goes out to buy some liquor, stashing one bottle in the chandelier. When he goes to the bar the next day, Nat (Howard Da Silva), the owner berates him for treating his girlfriend badly and warns him that he's on a path toward death. Don returns to the apartment to try to work on his novel "The Bottle," but consumed by self-doubt, goes to another bar, and steals a woman's purse to buy a drink. As the weekend wears on, his spiral downward continues apace. Although dated in some respects, the film's unadorned portrait of the relentless torture that is alcoholism still packs a powerful punch thanks to Wilder's sharp script, the deep-focus camerawork of John Seitz, and a career performance by Ray Milland.

all about alcoholics and their struggle in life

Created: 10/10/08
"The lost weekend" is a movie that I love, because it illustrates what happens
to alcoholics who are unable to quit drinking. It shows how it devastates the
life of the alcoholic and all around him or her including the entire family.
It shows it is a family disease and total abstinence is the only cure for
this horrible disease. I bought it as it is a movie I always want to have in
my home, whereby I can show others there is hope for the sufferring alcoholic.
Who doesn't have an alcoholic in their family or a friend in such horrific
circumstances? Also for myself, this movie, allows me to remember where I came
from, and I can't have one single drink, a day at a time. It truely is a
life saving movie, and what is more important than saving a life?

this was groundbreaking for exploring what was considered a taboo subject in its day. people just didn't talk about alcoholism and film depictions of drinking were usually glamorous or whimsical. the lost weekend is anything but: it's a nightmarish sometimes hallucinatory vision of a struggling writer ( ray milland ) boozing and battling his demons over the course of several days. it won four academy awards including best picture and best director for billy wilder.

Good Movie

I would have originally given this movie 3 stars, but considering my 14 year old son ( who hates old movies and anything in black and white ) loved it, I thought that I should give it 4 stars. Don't get me wrong, it is an interesting movie. It really does show the terrible side of alcoholism and how sad this addiction really is on an individual. It was a bit slow for my liking, but I applaud their attempt. Worth watching!
