For Love Of The Game

I have this movie on VHS and decided to buy it on DVD due to the extinction of VHS movies and VHS players. This movie, about an aging MLB pitcher at a crossroads in his baseball career and personal life, is quite true-to-form and accurate, baseball-speaking. Is Kevin Costner as 40-year-old Billy Chapel of the Detroit Tigers, with 19 major league seasons and more than 4,000 pitches on his frayed, pain-ravaged right arm, going to complete a perfect game in front of more than 56,000 fans at Yankee Stadium on the last day of the season?
And will Billy Chapel realize that Jane Aubrey (Kelly Preston, magazine writer/editor and single mom) is the love of his life before it is too late (she's set to fly off to a new job in London).
I liked that this movie had a happy ending (unlike my "love-of-my-life baseball player" story). I also like the baseball footage and how Billy Chapel can turn on the "mechanism" to allow himself to be in total concentration/control of his pitches and work beyond the pain in his hand/arm. Anyone who enjoys baseball (especially you women out there who have experienced a multi-year relationship with an MLB player) will enjoy this movie.

Great movie. Both chick flick and manly all in one.

This movie is a great movie. It is one that most can find something about to enjoy. The storyline will keep you in suspense. I like how you can get an insight into a major league pitcher's mind during a major league game. The sports nut in me was cheering him on while the love story side of my wife was cheering both the main charters. There is some really great music played during the movie, I bet the sound track would be good as well. Kevin Costner does a great acting job of both playing and looking the part of a major league pitcher. Kelly Preston does a great job as well. From the first time I watched it, it became one of my favorites. I would recommend this movie to anyone that likes good decent movies.

wonderful movie about baseball and the pursuit of a perfect game. also understanding what really matters in life are your relationships. kevin costner is the best in baseball movies because he truly loves the game. a must see. might be a little mature for younger viewers. some suggestive scenes with different love interests. definately not a children's movie in that regard. i just skip over the scenes when my kids are watching the movie, because everything else is wonderful!

I am NOT a sports watching person. This movie is one of the best movies I have seen in years. Kevin Costner plays Billy Chapel a pitcher for the N.Y. Yankees and he is fabulous. This is a must see romantic drama if ever I saw one. Two thumbs up for sure.

I kept catching this movie part way thru on TV. You can't fully understand the movie unless you watch it from the start. It reminds me of "The Natural" starring Robert Redford which set up the move in the first 10 minutes. Both films are about the people we encounter in life - good people, mean people, people down on their luck, loyal people who support you to the end, friends, family, etc.
Overall, a great movie about life - good times, bad times, things we cherish, things we regret. A good deed done will pay you back later (heartfelt advice to an outfielder who gets hit on the head by a fly ball who later catches a potential home run during a perfect game). A bad deed done can always be forgiven. All that matters is that we do the right thing in the end.
