Album Notes
Personnel: Keith Urban (vocals, guitar, E-bow, bouzouki, mandolin, piano, bass guitar, percussion); Ronnie Dunn (vocals); Tom Bukovac (guitar); Rami Jaffee (keyboards); Jimmie Lee Sloas (bass guitar); Chris McHugh (drums, programming). The fair-haired Aussie who came across the pond with guitar in hand to show Nashville how it's done, Keith Urban became a country music phenomenon in the early 2000s. Like his contemporary Brad Paisley, Urban combined songs with a broad-based appeal and fiery fretboard skills to gain a wide audience. LOVE, PAIN & THE WHOLE CRAZY THING finds Urban refining his approach ever further, to achieve the perfect marriage of pop, rock, and country.Electronic-sounding beats, soaring string arrangements, and searing lead guitar mesh seamlessly with banjo, steel guitar, and mandolin throughout the album. The amalgamation of '70s/'80s widescreen pop-rock a la Elton John and Bryan Adams with contemporary country sounds surprisingly natural here. From the airborne "Shine" to the down-and-dirty "Raise the Barn" (with a guest turn from Brooks & Dunn's Ronnie Dunn), Urban never falters. Whether the reason lies chiefly in his guy-next-door persona, hook-heavy songcraft, or instrumental deftness, LOVE, PAIN has platinum written all over it.

Editorial Reviews
Urban has a flexible tenor voice, with just a hint of rasp in it; he excels at singing ballads... -- Grade B-
Entertainment Weekly

3.5 stars out of 5 -- Imagine Daryl Hall with Nashville guitar skills and an Australian's fascination with Southern culture, and you have Keith Urban....He's accomplished in ballads, unafraid to scuff up his smoothness.

Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy Thing - Keith Urban

I don't get all of the negative reviews I've seen on eBay about this album. This is a unified body of work about the trials and tribulations of love. I'm a big Keith Urban fan and this is the most personal album he's created. Standout tracks include: "Everybody," "Shine," "Got it Right This Time," and "I Told You So" (one of my absolute favorite Urban tracks).

Some complain he's "not country enough", but listening to country radio today, there is very little which qualifies as traditional country; it's essentially the pop radio I grew up listening to in the late 70's (not that it's a bad thing) with a little "country" instrumentation. What I like most about Keith Urban is that he takes elements of rock, country and pop together to create a sound that is distinctively his. I can usually tell from the first few bars that it is a Keith Urban song.

Catchy choruses, deft guitar work and flawless production - could be said for any Keith Urban album, but especially true for this one!

True Story!

I bought this for the single "Everybody" & was pleasantly surprised that I am enjoying all the songs on this CD. Keith Urban is a Super Talented Singer Songwriter! Good Looking To Boot! The Enhanced CD is Mesmerizing & Mind Tripping! Features Ronnie Dunn from "Brooks & Dunn" on the single "Raise The Barn". If you like Rock & Roll & Country together with some meaningful slow music too..This CD is for you. Enjoy!

Once in a Lifetime...

Created: 09/11/06
REALLY great stuff by Mr. Urban on his 6th time around. This CD is for anyone who's crazy in love at the moment - lots of very sentimental and happy songs! Favorites include Once in a Lifetime, Shine, I Told You So and Tu Compania. Upbeat and cheerful - this album is proof that he's totally in love with Nicole. Highly recommended!! :)

Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy Thing Keith Urban

Created: 02/02/07
Big Urban fan here. I of course had to add this newest one to my collection. To me, it is a disappointment in many ways.

From The Ranch to Golden Road to Be Here there is one consistency with Urban's music: His sound. The infamous guitar riffs, his smile in his voice, the sadness we hear and share, and that one 'thing' that always lets you know this is Keith. This CD is missing that to me. The songs are not the hopeful, motivating, hand out the window in the wind tunes. The edge isn't here.

If this is the direction Keith is going with his music then I won't be buying another. It's just too "all over the place". There is no consistency, that Keith sound is nowhere to be found, it's just got no umph to me. Yeah, there's a catchy tune or two--but nothing magical, that screams Keith Urban.

Disappointment unfortunately.
