Movie synopsis

After years of swiping scenes from the leading men in such movies as KNOCKED UP and THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN, Paul Rudd finally headlines a star vehicle of his own. Unlike those Judd Apatow productions, it's John Hamburg (ALONG CAME POLLY) who directs I LOVE YOU, MAN, albeit with many of the touchstones of Apatow's highly successful freaks-and-geeks-with-heart aesthetic. In other words, this is not an Apatow film, but, with the male capacity for--and simultaneous inability to express--fraternal love as its core comic conceit (and emotional centerpiece), it may as well be.Rudd plays Peter Klaven, a real estate agent with a blossoming career and an imminent marriage to Zooey (THE OFFICE's Rashida Jones)--basically, he's lucky in all things except male bonding. The narrative arc centers on his quest for platonic man-love--as opposed to, say, finding the girl of his dreams--and follows the boilerplate dictates of a standard rom-com with a subversive wink. In this case, boy meets boy, boys bond over their common love of Rush and Andre the Giant, boys break up and make up, etc. Rudd and co-star Jason Segel (FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL), a fellow Apatow alum who plays Sydney Fife, the Type B object of Klaven's affection, imbue their roles with winning charisma and elevate the plot with real and nuanced chemistry. With a whip-smart pace, the film continually tills fresh comic ground as Hamburg finds punctuation points in every scene and never lets a gag overstay its welcome. While the supporting cast features many memorable turns by the likes of Jon Favreau, Jaime Pressly, and Andy Samberg, I LOVE YOU, MAN ultimately belongs to Rudd, who approaches insecurity and social awkwardness with the same dead-eye marksmanship that Peter Sellers did for slapstick.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

3 stars out of 5 -- "A canny examination of male friendships and the awkward ways in which they can complicate romantic relationships, this understated, often hilarious comedy best succeeds when hitting on uncomfortable, universal truths..."
Box Office - Wade Major (01/29/2009)

"The slight Rudd and the gangly Segel strike the right physical contrast for comedy....It's a rare comedy that actually grows funnier on reflection. It benefits enormously from the talents of the two stars."
Hollywood Reporter - Stephen Farber (03/13/2009)

"The movie works because everything hinges on the camaraderie and undeniable chemistry between Rudd and Segel....I LOVE YOU, MAN's light-hearted exploration of male bonding provides substantial fodder for humor, heightened by the inspired casting of two of the industry's most appealing comic actors."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (03/20/2009)

"Rudd has long been the nice guy/straight man character in comedies like this and he delivers that again with some added sweetness since this time around his posse is a bunch of gal pals."
Los Angeles Times - Betsy Sharkey (03/20/2009)

"[A] fitfully funny comedy....[The director] sets a nice, easygoing tone for the actors....That suits the talents of Mr. Rudd, a slack screen presence who owns the patent on male adorableness and is charming to watch..."
New York Times - Manohla Dargis (03/20/2009)

"Paul Rudd gives a startlingly funny and original performance as a nice guy with serious dweebish tendencies, and the delight of what Rudd does here comes down to how exquisitely embarrassing he is to watch....I LOVE YOU, MAN is on the side of all things rude, raunchy, and guyish..." -- Grade: A
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman (03/27/2009)

3 stars out of 4 -- "Paul Rudd and Jason Segel are howlingly funny....Their presence and ace comic timing kick the movie up a notch."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (04/02/2009)

"After delivering scene-stealing turns in THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN and KNOCKED UP, Rudd claims the much-deserved spotlight in I LOVE YOU, MAN, which in its own endearing way tweaks the very same male-bonding pieties that those movies made a fortune celebrating."
Washington Post (03/20/2009)

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "Jason Segel plays Sydney as a man thoroughly comfortable in his own skin, an unapologetic hedonist who uses his intelligence as a comic weapon....I LOVE YOU, MAN is, above all, just plain funny....You feel good watching the movie."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (03/18/2009)

Included in Entertainment Weekly's "The Best Films Of The Year" -- "The director, John Hamburg, crams I LOVE YOU, MAN with gags as wild as anything in THE HANGOVER..."
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman (12/25/2009)

I Love You, Man, a comedy from John Hamburg (2009)

Created: 24/08/09
In I Love You, Man, a comedy from John Hamburg (Along Came Polly, co-writer of Meet The Parents, Meet The Fockers, Zoolander), Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd, Knocked Up The 40 Year Old Virgin) is a successful real estate agent who, upon getting engaged to the woman of his dreams, Zooey, (The Offices Rashida Jones), discovers, to his dismay and chagrin, that he has no male friend close enough to serve as his Best Man. Peter immediately sets out to rectify the situation, embarking on a series of bizarre and awkward man-dates, before meeting Sydney Fife (Jason Segel, Forgetting Sarah Marshall), a charming, opinionated man with whom he instantly bonds. But the closer the two men get, the more Peters relationship with Zooey suffers, ultimately forcing him to choose between his fiancée and his new found bro, in a story that comically explores what it truly means to be a friend.

Funny funny movie, Enjoy this one with friends

Paul Rudd (Over Her Dead Body, Knocked Up and more) stars in this funny comedy as Peter Klaven, who just got engaged to Zooey a stunning beauty played by Rashida Jones.

Peter does not have any friends that he can invite to the wedding so he sets out to find a Best Man to take to the wedding.

what ensues is a search for a 'guy' friend and it is funny in every sense of the word.

Rudd does a great job in his own way in this film and seems to be establishing himself as a lead comedy actor.

Don't miss this one if you want a good laugh.

Rated 4 of 5 for a very funny movie that anyone would enjoy watching.

Thanks for checking out our I Love You Man review. If you’d like to watch the video version of our I Love You Man review you can see it at the bottom of the written review.

I’ve been a huge Paul Rudd fan for years now. We’ve all recognized him forever from a thousand different things. Josh on Clueless or Phoebe’s boyfriend Mike on Friends. But the moment I finally recognized his comedic genius was in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy where he played news reporter Brian Fantana. Oh yes my friends… Sex Panther, 60% of the time it works, every time.

Jason Segel is another story. When I saw him in Knocked Up, I recognized him from a few episodes of CSI, but neither his role in that, nor in Knocked Up impressed me at all. To be honest I sorta thought he was dead weight in an otherwise pretty satisfying comedy. I was shocked when I found out he was getting a leading role in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. But, as we all know, he knocked that one completely out of the park.

So put these two together in a movie called “I Love You, Man”, and I’m instantly interested. The trailers for the movie haven’t been very good, so I haven’t known what to expect. Did it turn out ok? Yes… yes it did.

I Love You Man

Created: 17/08/10
Pull Rudd has been an up and coming actor in the past few years and he finally gets to shine as the star of the unconventionally comedic "I Love You Man." In his past roles (40 Year Old Virgin, Anchorman) he has always the sort of "side character" that always has a bit of reason amongst the ridiculousness surrounding the story. Now that characteristic is presented in a funny way of it's own, his awkwardness comes center stage and he bursts out on the scene as another comedic talent of this decade. Highly recommend this movie. Funny, but not too stupid.

Witty, Funny, Great Date Flick!

Created: 04/04/11
Engaged couple is planning their wedding. The women has tons of girl-friends, the guy (Paul Rudd) has no best man, actually no male friends at all. He decides it's time to find men male friends he can "bond" with. Funny movie, raunchey at times, tender at times, great date movie. Love the cast!
