Mad Men - Season 1 (Blu-ray Disc, 2008, 4-Disc Set)

Jon Hamm|Theatrical release: 2007 | Rating: Not Rated

Movie synopsis

Matthew Weiner, a writer and executive producer for THE SOPRANOS, may have set this series in the picture-perfect 1960s, but his characters are just as scheming as the mobsters on his last show. MAD MEN begins in 1960 on Manhattan's Madison Avenue at the fictional ad agency of Sterling Cooper. Creative director Don Draper (Jon Hamm) rules the halls of his company and the hearts of every woman he meets, while his wife, Betty (January Jones), struggles to be the perfect mate and mother in a suburb upstate. But just as in the world of advertising, Don may not be all that he appears. In MAD MEN, the glass ceiling is dangerously low, and sexism reigns in a way that may shock modern viewers. But this isn't the prim '60s of THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW; Weiner's characters seduce, smoke, and swig with abandon--often within the walls of Sterling Cooper. MAD MEN takes equal parts substance and style to create an addictive cocktail that fully earned its freshman season wins at the Golden Globes for Best Dramatic Series and Best Actor in a Drama.

STILL MAD ABOUT MAD MEN GOING INTO SECOND SEASON!

Created: 19/07/08
Being someone who is interested in peroid pieces from the 1960s in particular, Mad Men's premise appealed to me about those men who worked on Madison Avenue at the time as an avenue to creative types to have rich, prolific careers in putting their creativity to use. At the heart of the series is one of these men, Don Draper, who on the surface seems to have it all (great job, respect of his peers over/under, a beautiful wife, two adorable children, many women on the side) yet somehow cannot help that all is not well with him from within. The angst of Don--as well as those around him--make this an exceptional series NOT to be missed!!!! Though set in 1960, the knawing which permeates Don's living can be seen in the prism of anyone who adjacent issues. Also, 1960 was still very much a (white) man's world--but not quite for long as this series will also touch upon as the episodes unfold. Change is in the air which we the viewers can see in retrospect that the characters, set in the moment, just cannot. With 16 Emmy nominations, including Best Drama Series, Best Actor (Jon Hamm, who plays Draper at the heart of this fine ensemble piece series) and Best Supporting Actor (John Slattery, better known as Gabrielle Solis' late mayoral husband, Victor, on Desperate Housewives. Slattery plays one of the partners at Draper's advertising firm.), not only is Mad Men a critically-acclaimed series unto itself, but also leading a probable shift towards the tastes of modern television viewers finding out just how wonderful basic television original series can really be. The show airs on AMC with its second season starting July 27, 2008!

I bought this first season set on Blu-ray to get the most out of the Mad Men viewing experience. I must say that, besides the great service I received from my seller, the set is a serious bargain!!!!! The picture and sound are solidly fine (the former stronger than the latter) and the commentaries are rather informative. I have liked this series all along since Day One, 2007. Yet now, in viewing this fine First Season set once more in the privacy of my own home via Blu-ray, my appreciation of this well-crafted series has grown even more--so much so that I just cannot say enough abot it as evidenced by the length of this review. Check Mad Men out for yourself and see if you will be Mad about it as I and may others evidentially are!!!!! :)

Perfect.

The last time I was into a series was for The Sopranos. After that show ended I never thought anything could top the caliber of that show, but Mad Men proved me so wrong. This show is perfect on every level and has by far shown that it has the potential to be one of the greatest shows on television ever with only its first season. Here's hoping that this series will continue to grow and get better. If you are into T.V (Basic cable television for that matter) you should feel ashamed if you do not invest, let alone rent this season.

great show, great disc

I watched the entire available series on DVD and loved it. Except for a very few anachronisms, the show is right on in terms of time and place. Now I am enjoying it on Blu-Ray. Great picture and sound.

Beautiful design, well-written -- even brilliant in spots (like Don's presentation of Kodak's Carousel slide projector at the end of Season 1), and beautifully acted (John Hamm deserves every award he has received).

The Blu-Ray discs are also beautifully executed, right down to the 'glass with clinking ice-cubes' sound which enhances the menu selections in Season 3.

A very catchy series to watch. Once you start, you can not stop watching it. It is amazing to think that just may be that is what those "Ad Men" did all those years ago. The acting is very good by all the parties played in the series!
