Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (DVD, 2009, Sensoramtic Full Screen)

Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath|Theatrical release: 2008 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

After they escaped from New York City, the creatures of 2005's MADAGASCAR are back in this African adventure. MADAGASCAR: THE CRATE ESCAPE features the return of the first film's vocal talents: Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sacha Baron Cohen, Cedric the Entertainer, and Andy Richter., In 2008's MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE 2 AFRICA, the endearing New York City zoo animals of the original hit movie return for another zany round of CGI adventures abroad. Leaving the island of the title by way of a ramshackle penguin-designed aircraft, the quartet of Alex the Lion (voiced by Ben Stiller), Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock), Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith), and Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer), along with unlikely friends such as King Julien the Lemur (Sacha Baron Cohen), crash-land on the African savannah, setting in motion a whole new series of exploits, involving Alex's long-lost parents (Bernie Mac and Sherri Shepherd) and a stranded group of tenacious NYC human tourists.Reuniting directors Tom McGrath and Eric Darnell, as well as all the principal cast members of the first film, MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE 2 AFRICA takes full advantage of its sweeping setting, making room for beautifully expansive landscapes amidst the mammal mayhem. While the leads are in fine form, they are ably assisted by series newcomers, including the late Mac, Shepherd, and Alec Baldwin, who plays a scheming rival lion. Though various plotlines get increasingly ridiculous as the movie goes on (see the return of MADAGASCAR's aggressive Grand Central Station granny), the good-natured main characters and their silly support players (particularly lemurs and penguins) keep ESCAPE 2 AFRICA entertaining no matter how far the story strays off the wildlife reserve.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"While the cast of characters has grown, the story still focuses on the value of friendship. The plot expands to include familial and romantic love, and to celebrate diversity and uniqueness....MADAGASCAR 2 is amusing animated fare."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (11/07/2008)

"There's true playfulness here whenever this wacky animal pack takes over....The exaggerated character designs create a nice visual contrast with the photorealistic details and flourishes."
New York Times - Manohla Dargis (11/07/2008)

"Spreading the comic wealth around are Cohen, whose lemur monarch is now given sufficient screen time to emerge as memorably nutty....Another enhancement is the film's look....The colors are particularly rich..."
Variety - Todd McCarthy (11/02/2008)

"This is a brighter, more engaging film than the original MADAGASCAR....The action is thrilling, and there is a romance between Gloria the hippo and Melman the giraffe."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (11/05/2008)

"Stiller excels at exploring the sillier aspects of self-involvement, and it's pleasant to see Alex reunited with motormouthed Marty the zebra..."
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (11/14/2008)

3 stars out of 5 -- "DreamWorks' animators up their game with the CG visuals..."
Total Film - Matthew Leyland (11/01/2008)

Running Time:89 Min.

After being stranded on the tiny, titular African island, our four heroes -- egomaniacal lion Alex (Ben Stiller), hypochondriac giraffe Melmen (David Schwimmer), smart alecky zebra Marty (Chris Rock), and lovelorn hippo Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith) -- are finally headed home. On a junk airplane refurbished by those pesky penguins, self-proclaimed King Julien (Sacha Baron Cohen), along with his right-hand advisor Maurice (Cedric the Entertainer) will take the quartet back to New York. Of course, things don't go as planned, and everyone ends up in the middle of a wildlife preserve in Africa. There, Alex meets up with his dad Zuba(Bernie Mac), mom (Sherrie Shepherd), and conniving Uncle Makunga (Alec Baldwin). Makunga (Alec Baldwin), however, sees the reunion of father and son as a means to banish both from the group, making him the new king. Marty, meanwhile, is having identity issues as a member of the zebra pack, and Gloria is unimpressed with the male hippos. Melman becomes the giraffes’ new witch doctor, but is told he has two days to live during his first day on the job. When the fun-loving feline fails at the tribe's right of passage, however, it's clear these big city critters need to get back to Manhattan, and fast.

Hope this helps you decide. Thanks for reading! :)

funny for the whole family

I loved that the writers didn't 'try too hard' to be funny. There were so many laugh out loud moments that I had to re-watch it because I was too busy laughing on some parts and missed the other parts. I'm not a big fan of Chris Rock or Ben Stiller but they really made the characters their own. I am definitely not a fan of Sacha's type of comedy but I love him as the meerkat. Jada and David had more funnier lines and more interesting to watch than in Part 1. I'm glad that the makers of the movie know that we parents have to sit through these kid movies because the kids beg us to go watch it and its nice when its worth it and we end up liking it more than the kids.

A Brilliant Return

Created: 02/06/09
It's rare when a family movie sequel follows closely behind it's predecessor. Naturally the conflict story was up with stronger cliches and some laughs were down via tender-ish moments but all in all it's definitely enjoyable. Dreamworks is really cranking out some good stuff lately. Thank goodness the original cast (Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, etc) wasn't replaced.

Worth seeing!

We played the video game version before we watched the movie & it helped us understand the new characters & story much better. The character humor is excellent, but some parts seemed to drag on. Not as good as the first movie. Worth seeing though!
