Album Notes
Personnel: Bruce Springsteen (vocals, guitars, harmonica, pump organ, synthesizer, glockenspiel, percussion, background vocals); Little Steven (guitars, mandolin, background vocals); Nils Lofgren (guitars, background vocals); Clarence Clemons (saxophone, background vocals); Roy Bittan (piano, organ); Danny Federici (organ, keyboards); Garry Tallent (bass guitar); Max Weinberg (drums); Patti Scialfa (background vocals).Additional personnel: William Pu, Jay Christy, Sheela Lyengar, Kenn Wagner, Justin Bruns, Olga Shpitko, Christopher Pulgram, Soozie Tyrell, John Meisner (violin); Amy Chang, Tania Maxwell Clements, Lachlan McBane (viola); Karen Freer, Charae Kruege, Daniel Laufer (cello); Patrick Warren (tack piano, chamberlin); Jeremy Chatzky (upright bass).Following up two folk-flavored albums, MAGIC finds Bruce Springsteen laying down his acoustic guitar to reclaim his rock-hero crown. He's assisted in this endeavor by producer Brendan O'Brien, best-known for big-time '90s hard rock, but the results have little in common with O'Brien's grungy past. Instead, MAGIC's sonic blueprint is more in line with Bruce's last stadium-rock statement, 2002's THE RISING. The album is front-loaded with hard-charging, heavy-riffing tunes ("Radio Nowhere," "You'll Be Comin' Down") that benefit from the sure-fire attack of the E Street Band. In fact, "Livin' in the Future" harks back to the band's vintage '70s work.MAGIC isn't all back-to-basics rockers, though; evocative ballads that employ atmospheric string arrangements indicate that Springsteen is content neither with standing still nor with looking backwards. One of the most rewarding aspects of the album is the fact that after the relative tunelessness of 2005's DEVILS & DUST, Bruce seemingly learned from the folk gems he covered on his Pete Seeger homage a year later, and started writing arresting melodies again. Any way you look at it, those who may have been put off by Springsteen's previous stylistic diversions will have a welcome feeling for MAGIC.

Editorial Reviews
Ranked #06 in Q's The 50 Best Albums Of 2007 -- At 58, The Boss has arrived at another peak.
Q

MAGIC may be the closest approximation to an old-school, big-noise Bruce album in ages.
No Depression

4 stars out of 5 -- [MAGIC] is BORN TO RUN crossed with TUNNEL OF LOVE, an attempt to recover the indomitable youthful fury of the former, astutely tempered by the older, wiser, sadder resignation of the latter.
Uncut

No album could say more about the uncertain national mood of 2007....Bruce Springsteen is back in the masterpiece business. -- Grade: A
Entertainment Weekly

3.5 stars out of 5 -- 'Your Own Worst Enemy' and 'Girls in Their Summer Clothes' channel Brian Wilson, layering sleigh bells and swelling strings to craft experimental chamber pop.

Rolling Stone

5 stars out of 5 -- Springsteen has rediscovered the boardwalk-dance-party power of BORN TO RUN and the Mitch Ryder and Jackie DeShannon encore covers in his 1975 and '78 shows.
Rolling Stone

Songs of disenchantment and despair rarely zing with so much energy and life.

Bruce Springsteen Magic CD - Awesome !

Created: 15/07/08
I saw Bruce live awhile back and he performed many of the songs on the Magic CD, and I had to get this music for my own. I found a copy on eBay and have been enjoying the songs ever since. The music on this newest of Springsteen's many releases is some of the best he's ever done. Don't think he still doesn't know how to rock, "Radio Nowhere" will have you on your feet. There is a another cool rocker - " Livin' in the Future". And then there's "Long Walk Home". "Gypsy Biker" with it's eerie and soulful guitar, makes you feel like you are winding down the road with the wind in your face. And there are great Beatle-esque strings and sound on "Your own worst Enemy". "Girls in their Summer Clothes" and "I'll Work for your Love" are pure Springsteen. "Magic" is eerie and profound in it's hushed performance. "Last to Die" is hauntingly beautiful and "Devil's Arcade" is a wonderful love song presented almost in a folk/bluegrass vein that Bruce has done so well in the past. Don't just stop with listening to the songs though, you have to check out the words, which sting, provoke, make you say aaah, oh yeah, and just plain amaze you. Mr. Springsteen is a poetic genius that we are all so fortunate to still have making passionate, intelligent music for us! This is a true master, who has a tremendously expressive voice. Hope you will check it out.

Magic - Springsteen,Bruce

Created: 15/07/08
Magic - Springsteen - Bruce is well worth the time and money of purchase and listening. Well crafted and inspiring songs wait within. Gypsy Biker the 5th cut seems a different approach musically with sounds of slide guitar echoing mystically. I feel the 9th cut Last to Die might have been a better title for the CD which looks and feels more like the old albums some of use to buy before CD's. The song is also an excellent mix of the Springsreen sound with a bit of strings. Long Walk Home with sax and driving bass and acoustic guitar is another very good track. The 1st track Radio Nowhere is a good track for the first to hit air time but should not be the last of this very well made album.
Much better than The Rising Bruce.

Bruce Springsteen "Magic" *SEALED*

Created: 29/11/07
I'll go out on a limb and call it Bruce's' best since "Born To Run". He takes us on a journey back to the boardwalk with "Girls In Thier Summer Clothes" and "I'll Work For Your Love", to the battlefields with "Gypsy Biker", and "Last To Die", and back to the highways of doubt with "Magic", "Radio Nowhere", and "Livin' In The Future".
I find that the more I listen to it, the more I take from it.

ALL KILLER NO FILLER

Created: 26/09/07
This is destined to be considered one of the greatest rock albums of all time. Perhaps Bruce's best album since Born to Run. It's one beautiful song after another. The E Street Band never sounded better. The standard doesnt slip for a single track. Brilliant.

It's still Bruce!

Created: 16/02/08
It's Bruce, so how much of a critic could I be? I find the songs sounding a little too much alike. It seems to me that each song has pretty much the same beat, tempo and overall rythym. I also believe that Bruce's voice gets lost in the music, specifically the guitar a bit. I would like it a lot more if there were one or two songs where the band broke off in an instramental abyss. It does not happen! I would also enjoy it more if Bruce had a few true ballets. Outside of a few songs, they seem to me to be fairly shallow in meaning. Bruce and the Band have certainly done better. The overall sound quality seems a bit off. Where was it recorded??? Oh well, it's still Bruce nad that's all that matters...
