Man of the House (DVD, 2005)

Stephen Herek, Tommy Lee Jones|Theatrical release: 2005 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

A startling mixture of giggling T&A, old man/young girl bonding, bloody violence, and gross-out humor, this drama-action-comedic soufflé could comes courtesy director Stephen Herek (MISTER HOLLAND'S OPUS, THE MIGHTY DUCKS). Cedric the Entertainer has a great bit as an ex-con who helps the ladies with some hip hop dance moves. Anne Archer plays the ranger's older love interest. And the lascivious, multi-ethnic lovelies are played by Christina Milian, Kelli Garner, Monica Keena, Paula Garces, and Vanessa Ferlito.Tommy Lee Jones stars in this action-comedy as a tough old Texas Ranger who winds up babysitting a squadron of cheerleaders when they inadvertently witness a gangster's murder. His no-nonsense ways clash with the girls' fun-filled lifestyle at first: he makes them wear seatbelts, confiscates their cell phones, beats up on any guy who comes near them (including an awestruck pizza delivery boy) and makes sure no one sneaks out of the house on dates. Eventually he discovers the girls aren't as ditzy as they first appear. They get him to loosen up a little, and even help him to patch things up with his neglected daughter (Shannon Marie Woodward). Meanwhile a crooked federal agent is out the send the girls to an early grave. MAN OF THE HOUSE was filmed in and around the University of Texas.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"[A] good-natured comedy....Director Stephen Herek keeps things moving and throws in some lively action sequences but keeps the emphasis on the amusing and affectionate relationships between Jones and the girls."
Los Angeles Times - Kevin Thomas (02/28/2005)

"[L]ikeable, evincing a playfulness towards some of the genre's most familiar tropes....[Jones] pitches himself into self-parody with remarkable vigour."
Sight and Sound - Jonathan Barnes (06/01/2005)

Man of the House - 2005 DVD

Man of the House is a 2005 comedy crime film starring Tommy Lee Jones as a Texas Ranger. This is one of the funninest comedy movies I have watch. Tommy Lee Jones is Sharp who is given the thankless task protecting a group of cheerleaders, who have witnessed a murder. Sharp moves in with the girls and the two young FBI men with him move into the fraternity house across the street, where they end up busting a drug deal. Sharp sets some ground rules, including no cell phones. He also tells them to "cover up in his presence" referring to the girls' revealing clothes. When they refuse, he orders an air conditioner, forcing them to dress warmly. Sharp is posing as a cheerleading coach specializing in conditioning, and at a football game he tackles an opposing team's mascot when the mascot approaches the girls with a gun, later revealed to be a water gun. Other humorous mishaps occur (I’m not telling) but Sharp's relationship with the girls begins to strengthen. Much of the movie was shot in Austin, Texas on the University of Texas campus. Texas Governor Rick Perry has a cameo appearance in the film as himself. The movie is rated PG-13 for violence, sexual content, crude humor, and a drug reference.

Brand New Man of the House 2005 DVD - great movie!!!!!!

Created: 30/01/08
I love this movie. This is probably one of the best comedies that I have seen. It has a little bit of romance, humor, and action/violence. This movie is about a cop who has to watch/baby-sit five teenage cheerleaders who witnessed a gangster murder. It is a very hard task since the only thing that all the girls want to do is go out and PARTY instead of staying in the house. This movie kept me laughing the entire time. But I do enjoy the ending when the five cheerleaders help Tommy Lee Jones reunite with his daughter. I would definitely recommend this movie to everyone, especially the women, but I do think that this movie is definitely a chick flick.

What Happened Tommy Lee?

Created: 13/10/06
Remember Tommy Lee Jones? I sure do! The Missing, The Fugitive, Blue Sky, Coal Miner's Daughter, JFK - heck, even Men in Black. Tommy Lee Jones is the best silent/cynical/sarcastic tough guy who actually has a sense of humor in Hollywood. So why is he in this movie?

The premise has been done many, many times before - group of girls witness a murder and he is in charge of protecting them until the guy is caught. Lots of giggling and lessons learned. he learns how to relate to his daughter and the girls learn responsibility.

Good if you have nothing to watch on a rainy Saturday afternoon but for that watching something with some substance or for funny/sarcastic Tommy Lee watch Men in Black.

Cheerleaders and a Texas Ranger

Created: 24/01/07
Tommy Lee Jones as a Texas Ranger. Then add five high-strung cheerleaders. Funny and yet on the edge. When the cheerleaders witness a killing he is assigned to protect them. Of course they fight him along the way. One cheerleader develops a crush on him. Another becomes a friend while the other 3 just try to put up with him. When he has a date they all pitch in and help him to get the lady. The killer finds out about the witnesses and he tries every way to get at them. Watch this to find out how this ends.

Light entertainment

If you are looking for a relatively family friendly movie that is just fun to watch and doesn't require much thought, this is a good choice. The movie has lots to offer, humor, light action, italian-style western bravado (ala Texas Ranger) and big name actors. Cedric was funny and Tommy Lee actually smiles a few times. I liked it, good to take your mind off the problems of the world for an hour and a half, and isn't that a good reason to watch a movie? A few spots of mild profanity.
