Man on the Moon (DVD, 2000, Widescreen)

Milos Forman, Jim Carrey, Danny DeVito|Theatrical release: 1999 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

In a remarkable and touching performance, Jim Carrey tones down his usual idiosyncrasies to play late avant garde comedian Andy Kaufman in MAN ON THE MOON. In life, Kaufman was a complex, controversial, and, at times, insane performer, and Carrey captures this, as well as the subtle nuances of his more toned-down private life. Director Milos Forman stages faithful recreations of Kaufman's pranks, method-like immersion in characters, and even scenes from TAXI, the hit TV show that made him a star, but also follows the comedian through his tragic diagnosis with cancer and his loving relationship with his girlfriend Lynne Margulies (Courtney Love). Danny DeVito, Kaufman's real-life TAXI co-star, plays George Shapiro, the manager who discovers him and is willing to put up with all his antics, acknowledging Andy's wry genius. Along the way on his self-made rocky road of stardom, Kaufman reinvents himself as a foreign man who mangles jokes, and as Elvis; lip-syncs the MIGHTY MOUSE cartoon theme after a full minute of dead air time on Saturday Night Live; becomes a "professional" wrestler, and subsequently manages to sabotage his TV career. The supporting cast in MAN ON THE MOON is excellent, including Paul Giamatti has his comedic partner-in-crime, and many members of the real cast of TAXI.

Touching movie

I bought this movie because I love everything that Jim Carrey does. I wasn't disappointed! This wonderful movie about comedian Andy Kaufman was played beautifully by Jim Carrey. It was a very touching story that moved me to tears. I remember watching Andy Kaufman on TV so some of the scenes were true to life and Carrey looked so much like him! Even though the true story theme was bittersweet, I enjoyed it.

One of the best movies out there

Created: 20/01/08
This movie is one of the best movies i liked so far. It has all sorts of genre involved in this. Mostly comedy, which will make you laugh at most of the times. It tells us how Jim Carey became a comedian. Very touching and there are times where you can actually feel like crying. The good thing about this movie is that you can see how Jim Carey became a comedian and the process of doing it. The least I like about this movie is the introduction of the film. When it starts, it showed Jim Carey saying this movie was over and then followed by the credits. I was shocked that this was a fake movie but after fast forwarding a little to see if this was a fake, it wasn't. I was fooled by the film itself. However i still rate this movie one of the best comedy films out there! Go watch it now, you'll be surprised.

This is a great movie about the life of Tony Clifton. Some people might try to tell you it is all about Andy Kauffman, but it isn't. Andy plays a big part in Tony's story, though. Jim Carey might have played his best movie part since The Mask. Hey Rocky! Buy this it is well worth it. Woopdie doo, woopdie die, stick a needle in your eye! I will survive!

Thought provoking biographical look at Andy Kaufman

Created: 09/02/08
People who enjoy serious, sometimes dark, comedy already know the talent that was Andy Kaufman. Jim Carey did Andy proud and I know Andy is smiling back at him. The TV series was a big break for Andy, who is a complex person to begin with. This told the whole story, as best as possible, since Andy Kaufman was quite a private person.
