Mandolin Method 1

Rich Del Grooso's insistance on the mandolin player playing by standard musical notation is a major drawback to the rating I give this book - average. Mandolin Method 1 is almost the exact same book as Del Grosso's first edition, but more expensive and includes a CD highlighting the maestro's accomplished straight-laced style (I prefer to listen to Rich's other styles; blues and rag). That's about all the CD is - something to listen to, not much to learn by, without insruction. I would highly recommend this book if a DVD were included that showed picking method, but I guess I'm a visual learner. Don't get me wrong, in the first third of the book there is tablature, but if you don't learn standard music reading up to this point, the book is pretty disappointing. Del Grosso's Hal Leonard's Mandolin Method 1, 2nd ed. book is not that much fun to use. So... I'll give it 1/2 a thumbs up.
