Hollywood meets Bollywood...

Created: 26/01/09
Stunning Ali Larter plays Marigold Lexton, a spoiled American B-film star who is stranded in India when the funding (and production) of Kama Sutra 3 becomes non-existent. She humbly accepts a part role in a Bollywood picture and falls in love with the movie's choreographer/actor...Prem (played by Salman Khan)
who also is secretly royalty and estranged from his father because he chose acting and dancing over the family's traditional purpose and standing.

Cute music numbers and dance sequences intertwined within the Bollywood movie production within the movie add to the developing relationship which is threatened by a tradition vs. love plot involving Prem's arranged marriage to someone else and complicated by Marigold's obsessive ex-boyfriend, Barry, who goes to India to find her.

Prem, though his grandmother had foretold Marigold to be his true love 25 years before, gives into duty and honor and sacrifices his love for Marigold and agrees to be married to a woman he does not love. Of course, the ending of the movie is not to be missed as true love prevails over social pressure.

No sex, nudity, or kissing scenes (Director Willard Carroll's respect to bollywood standards) are in the film. Several four-letter expletives are sprinkled throughout, so parents be warned.

Overall, the movie is good (8.5 out of 10). The dvd extras are very insightful into the director and actors views and purposes.

Plot summary and my opinion

If you have ever seen a Bollywood movie, you know they are longer than most movies due to the multiple song and dance routines (each one is over five minutes long). Fortunately, this one has fewer song and dance routines and fits into the “standard” movie length. Don’t get me wrong, I like Bollywood movies, but tend to fast forward through the song and dance portions. I bought this DVD because I am an Ian Bohen fan. Although his role wasn’t as large as I hoped, he still had a good amount of screen time.

Ali Larter stars as feisty B-list actress Marigold Lexton, who has landed a part in Kama Sutra 3 and had an eventful journey to Goa, India. It is here she found out that the movie has been canceled, and she has no money to return home as she was provided with a one-way ticket. She lands a singing/dancing role in Manoj Sharma's film, meets with Dance Instructor, Prem Rajput, who tells her that his grandma had predicted that he would meet and then get married to a woman named Marigold. She becomes attracted to him, even accompanies him to Jodhpur, Rajasthan, to his family home on the occasion of his sister, Pooja's marriage. It is here she will find out that Prem belongs to a royal family, and his marriage had already been finalized with a woman named Jaanvi, and no one in this family has ever dared to go against arranged marriages and tradition.

Overall, this was a good movie. Like most Bollywood movies, there is at least one element of controversy/conflict of the traditional Indian culture. But true love triumphs over adversity and a happy ending is had by all.

This is a great Bollywood movie that encompasses East meets and gets involved with west. Music and dancing was excellent. Having an american actress should widen the appeal for this movie. The storyline builds through the whole movie;and was never quite sure what was going to happen next.I enjoyed it a lot. great love story, with lots of ups and downs.

Marigold is a modern day love story

I had seen this movie on cable and knew that I wanted to add it to my dvd collection. The music is great, the costumes are colorful and the story is funny, sweet and romantic all in one. I'm not big on Bali movies but this one is a keeper.
