Product description

Synopsis
Marley is a hyperactive, intractable, mischievous, and entirely lovable yellow Lab, acquired by John Grogan and his wife because they thought having a dog would prepare them for parenthood. Not only did Marley take over their lives, but when children did eventually come along, Marley retained his place as firstborn and supremely difficult child. Grogan's very amusing chronicle of Marley's life and adventures is a first-rate memoir of a memorable pet.

Publisher's Note

The heartwarming and unforgettable story of a family in the making and the
wondrously neurotic dog who taught them what really matters in life

John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow furball of a puppy. Life would never be the same.

Marley quickly grew into a barreling, ninety-seven-pound streamroller of a Labrador retriever, a dog like no other. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, flung drool on guests, stole women's undergarments, and ate nearly everything he could get his mouth around, including couches and fine jewelry. Obedience school did no good-Marley was expelled. Neither did the tranquilizers the veterinarian prescribed for him with the admonishment, "Don't hesitate to use these."

And yet Marley's heart was pure. Just as he joyfully refused any limits on his behavior, his love and loyalty were boundless, too. Marley shared the couple's joy at their first pregnancy, and their heartbreak over the miscarriage. He was there when babies finally arrived and when the screams of a seventeen-year-old stabbing victim pierced the night. Marley shut down a public beach and managed to land a role in a feature-length movie, always winning hearts as he made a mess of things. Through it all, he remained steadfast, a model of devotion, even when his family was at its wit's end. Unconditional love, they would learn, comes in many forms.

Is it possible for humans to discover the key to happiness through a bigger-than-life, bad-boy dog? Just ask the Grogans.

Marley & Me by John Grogan (Hardcover)

Created: 21/04/06
If you love dogs this is a must read. Grogan shares with you the experiences, love, laughter and heartbreak in owning a yellow lab named Marley. Grogan begins the adventure when he and his wife decide to purchase a yellow lab puppy.
Grogan writes this true story with such openness, he allows you step into his
personal life with his wife Jenny, himself, Marley and eventually his children.
Marley, the ever incorrigible, faithful, rambunctious lab who lives life as he sees it makes us question how we live ours. Grogan did an excellent job in presenting his story to the reader. He doesn't just tell the story he brings the reader into his life to share it.

Read the book, seen the movie

This was by far one of the most excellent books that I've come to read. It had sad parts, and funny parts. Same case as with the movie. It honestly was sad, but very good. It was a very good movie as well as book. He (Marley) did do some bad things as a dog (but I wouldn't consider him the world's worst dog) but you should definitely go get the DVD and get the book. Dog lover, or not will love this book.

Hurricane Marley

So I'm all for mushy animal tales, and I'm all for stories of hilarious antics. This one has both. The author blends his life and that of Marley's existence into a seamless story of love, laughter, fear, trust and loyalty. This book really shows how animals impact our lives and change them, sometimes we don't think it's for the better but in the long run - it is. I really enjoyed reading it, I knew the ending would be sad. Most animal stories end that way. I knew I'd cry, and I did. Such is life. Mostly I cried because my dog is 8 and getting up there in years..and she exhibits some of the same old aging signs Marley demonstrated. It's difficult as a dog owner (or we think of ourselves as parents to our pets) to watch with no uncertain realization that their lives will invariably come to an end. And we will have to cope. And we do but it's difficult. This book really hits home and if you want a sweet read go ahead...and if you don't want to cry - just skip the last few chapters. :-)

Marley & Me is very Heartwarming

Created: 08/07/07
A friend and fellow dog lover recommended this book to me. I also read positive reviews by people who don't particularly like dogs. My copy arrived in great condition, and I consumed the story in 3 days. I found it to be very heartwarming, evoking laughter and tears. Having unconditionally loved and lost pets myself, I can relate to the bond this family had with their beloved dog, despite his hyper-active and sometimes destructive behavior. As the Grogan family grew, Marley remained a loyal member. He required alot of patience, particulary with his intense fear of thunderstorms, but the Grogans commitment to his best interests overcame the obstacles. The book spans the entire life of Marley, and is a wonderful tribute the author has given him. I'm circulating this book throughout my family, and they also enjoy it...I highly recommend it.

Marley & Me by John Grogan

Created: 06/10/08
A delightful and light hearted read, I thoroughly enjoyed Marley & Me. John Grogan's style is easy, almost conversational, and perfectly suited for juvenille reading.

I love reading any book about dogs. I can't say this is the best book I've ever read, but still I admire and respect Grogan for giving Marley a place in history and a tribute to honor the legacy he left behind.

As an advocate of dog rescue and a dog trainer, I was very disturbed by his method of training Marley with a choke chain, and can only hope Grogan gets better counseling on kinder ways to train an out of control, over exuberant canine.

Through it all, while not Grogan's biggest fan, Marley will always have a place in my heart, and for that I do thank Grogan for sharing with us Marley's spirit.

Read it for what it is - a loving tribute to a dog who only wanted to please his person, a dog who gave undying loyalty, a dog who understood better than man ever will, what it means to have a soul.

I would only ask that if you find yourself with a dog like Marley, get yourself some serious professional training from someone who will not consider a choke chain as a proper method of training.
