Movie synopsis

Delbert Mann's big-screen remake of Paddy Chayefsky's 1953 teleplay, one of the most successful works of film's Golden Age, stars Ernest Borgnine as Bronx butcher, Marty Piletti. A good-natured man, if plain and overweight, the 34-year-old bachelor has become fed up with the dreariness of life with vacant, dead-end friends like Angie (Joe Mantell), omnipresent relatives like his cousin Tommy (Jerry Paris), and his nagging mother, Theresa (Esther Minciotti), with whom he shares a house. Often rejected by women, he feels that he is too unattractive to marry, and is far from eager to endure further humiliation. Still, Marty finds himself at a local dance hall, where he angrily refuses a man who offers him a few bucks to take home a blind date who has turned out to be a dog. The butcher seeks out the humiliated woman, Clara (Betsy Blair), who's in tears, and after he comforts her, they return to the dance. As Marty confesses similar experiences of his own to Clara, he realizes that he may have found the woman he's been looking for. Influenced by neo-realist masterpieces like UMBERTO D, Chayefsky's poignant, brilliantly observed kitchen-sink drama remains as persuasive as ever, as it explores the universal need to give and receive love.

Marty Is an Underdog and a Nice Guy Winner

Created: 29/04/07
This little movie will steal your heart. It's about a 1950s nerd (but not a real smart guy--just a nice guy, played by Ernest Borgnine.) He has everything going against him. Poor, living at home with his mother at the age of 34, unattractive he thinks. He has been rejected by girls so many times that he has practically given up. So one last time, his mother encourages him to go to the Stardust Ballroom. And there he is almost paid to take an "unattractive" girl home, but being a nice guy he refuses. But in the end he spends the evening with her and politely escorts her home.

What happens after that is full of irony. His once encouraging mother takes a dislike to the girl; his jealous friend doesn't like her either. His depressed aunt casts woe on the whole situation. His unhappy cousin played by Jerry Paris won't even listen to him.

What's a poor boy to do in this situation? Watch the movie "Marty" and see. You will be glad you did. At only 1.5 hours, this movie swept the Oscars of 1955: Best Picture, Best Actor (Borgnine), Best Screenplay (Paddy Chayevsky), and Best Director (Delbert Mann). Nominations went to Joe Mantell, Marty's jealous best friend (Best Supporting Actor), and Betsy Blair, the unattractive girlfriend who is really quite pretty (Best Supporting Actress.) And finally, this movie won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival.

This movie shows that you have to be your own thinker and make up your mind to find happiness yourself. It is a real daybrightener and a source of hope for all of us.

Good Ol' Marty!

This movie is one of my all time favorites. There is nothing better than a good ol'fashion movie about life. This 1950's movie is a story during the time when there were still butcher shops. Marty is an Italian butcher who in his mid 30's is really looking for a purpose in his life. He is a bachelor who lives with his mom and still goes out at night with his buddies looking for some action or rather just something to do. He is tiring of this life and wants something more. He wants to find the right girl, make a career decision, and basically just find comfortable happiness. This movie is an all time classic. And Ernest Borgnine is superb in it!!

One of the greatest film studies of an ordinary man. Ernest Borgnine is just stunning in this story of a simple but passionate guy trying to find love in a world where he can't meet the obvious standards. The supporting cast is outstanding; a real slice of life in 1950's New York, but it could be anywhere. If you love film, or people, this is a must-see.

I really like this film a lot, because it displays people that are diverse,,what I didn't like was the fact that certain ones in the film refered to Betsy Blairs' character as looking like a dog, I thought she was unique, but all in all I think it is a good film, with good features, thanks for it sellers, & ebay.
