The Mask (DVD, 1997, Standard and Letterbox)

Chuck Russell, Jim Carrey, Cameron Diaz|Theatrical release: 1994 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Boring bank account officer Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey) is tired of kowtowing to his know-nothing boss and being rejected by attractive women. But just before he decides to end it all, Stanley is transformed from a spineless accountant into a jiving zoot-suited hellion when he discovers the superhuman powers of an ancient wooden mask he finds floating in the river. With the mask, Stanley has the courage to do everything he's ever dreamed of. That includes wooing blond bombshell Tina Carlyle (Cameron Diaz), a torchy singer at the swanky nightclub Coco Bongo. Too bad Tina's caught up with mobster Dorian Tyrel, a brutal villain planning to rob Stanley's bank and take over the city! Now it's up to Stanley to rid the besieged metropolis of Tyrel. Based on the Dark Horse comic book, THE MASK introduced Diaz to audiences and helped cement Carrey's fame after ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE. Its story of a human cartoon, courtesy of computer effects and Carrey's talent for impressions, was a perfect fit for the comedian's pliable facial features., When a no-account bank clerk discovers a curious wooden mask he finds it has some interesting properties; to wit, the mask magnifies the wearer's personality to superhuman proportions--oddly, others seem to find this attractive. The no-longer-nebbischy clerk enjoys his new life considerably, but when he seduces the girlfriend of a powerful gangster, complications result. Academy Award Nominations: Best Visual Effects.

This movie was top of it's class at the time it was released with special effects galore, and of course Jim Carrey's antics that children and adults alike have parroted since. Carrey seems to own the movie and acts well as a crazy green faced villain when he puts on this mask that has magical properties.

This movie unfortunately is one of the ever growing movies that are destined for the bargain bin at department stores. Don't let this get you down and ruin your opinion of a truly good family film. Take advantage of the low prices to steal this well put together movie.

The Mask features great slapstick comedy and great special FX

The Mask is a movie full of great Special FX, Laughs, and a Beautiful Girl (Cameron Diaz).

Jim Carrey is great as Stanley Ipkiss/The Mask, and he manages to do a great job without going too far over the top.

Although The Mask features some pretty Mature Moments making it a little inappropriate for younger audiences, it's a great movie all-around.

Final Verdict:

5/5

Rent or Buy?: If you're a comedy fan this movie is already in your collection, unless you're a comedy fan who hates Jim Carrey.

This... Mask character... : )

This movie is great. Jim Carrey shines in this role - both as mild-mannered Stanley Ipkiss and as the love-crazy wildman, The Mask. In her film debut (and probably her best role) Cameron Diaz is the sulty, sexy songstress Tiny Carlyle plays the love interest for both Stanley and the Mask, and the chemistry is bang-on.

All around a hilarious action packed movie. I love it...

Excellent, funny and very enjoyable

I have seen this movie several times and enjoy it each time. It is simply a funny "good guy gets the girl" and gets the bad guys movie but with good music and humor in it. Jim Carey is simply funny and amazing. When Jim is having a rough day and he sees what seems to be a person floating in the river, he jumps in to save them, only to find out, it is not a person but "the mask". The fun starts...a very funny movie!
