Medicine Man (DVD, 1999)

John McTiernan, Sean Connery|Theatrical release: 1992 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Removing himself from modern society, Dr Robert Campbell (Sean Connery), has become a Medicine Man to the people of the Amazonian village which he inhabits. By a freak mishap, Campbell has deduced that the cure for cancer can be derived from a chemical found in a Brazilian flower. Fellow scientist/beauty Dr. Rae Crane tracks down the elusive Campbell in an effort to monitor his progress. The two doctors, although physical attracted to one another butt heads when a villager becomes sick, and Campbell wishes to use only remaining bit of cancer curing serum to save the native's life. In addition to battling each other, the doctors must contend with a group of loggers who pose a danger to the village.Shot in Mexico and Brazil, Director John McTiernan returns to the jungles he burned in his 1987 blockbuster, PREDATOR, and delivers a scenic psychic thriller. Gone is the gore from McTiernan's previous films. Instead he has choses a more humanistic topic, conservation, plus, the sparks between actors Connery and Bracco are more incendiary than any machine gun.

Editorial reviews

"...The movie has a pleasing daftness....Myers, like Martin Short, works in his own lyrical stratosphere. There's a joyousness to him that's almost childlike..."
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman (02/21/1992)

"...[Connery] remains a genuinely magnetic presence..."
Los Angeles Times - Michael Wilmington (02/07/1992)

Dr. Connery

Though this movie was not liked by the critics, it is to me a good example of what is happening througout the world as the human race seems bent on destroying that which gives us life. There is a great banter between Sean Connery and Lorraine Bracco. The natives are wonderful to watch as they go about their daily lives. Giving back the stick to the medicine man is superb.

I finally had a chance to watch this movie the other evening, I know it seems like it was an older movie but worth every second . and its a true fact that people tend to forget while sitting at home that our rain forests are vanishing. this movie will touch you it will make you think for a minuite you wantto help it willl also confuse you as to how to help, it will make you cry, and you will laugh for sure, the pairing of Mr. Connery and Ms. Broccco, If i spelled her name correctly will knock you off your feet. its that .. Its that I want you but I don't want you to know I want you kind of love story mixedin to a serious issue. it is well worth buying tis movie. It was one of those movies you did not want to end.. you wanted more more even as it did end. Thank you for your time.

I love this movie!

Action, adventure, and Sean Connery! This movie is fun to watch and yet makes you think. We are destroying the rain forests in South America. This has and will continue to have a negative effect on our planet, and on us! This movie brings that to light. Everyone should see it. Especially young adults, as they are the people who will be in a position to changes things in the future. There is some nudity, but it is the natives who live in the rain forest and it wouldn't be real if they were made to wear more clothing. As you get into the movie it becomes very natural to see everyone's back side and women's breasts. (However, young adolescents might have trouble not giggling!) I highly recommend this movie!

For of all I love Sean Connery, and I will watch any movie that he is in.This is one of my favorites because I like the story line. and I like his female co star in this movie. The chemistry between the two of them is great. Very funny in parts and very touching in others. I just like the cinematography, the story line andthe acting. I don't care what the critics said about this movie.

One of the Best!

I've watched this movie numerous times and have never found a flaw. It's brilliantly done and makes you wonder about all the other "natural" cures out there that are awaiting discovery. It's unfortunate that in the US, cures to diseases are so regulated and censored by the FDA and AMA, where in other countries, natural, herbal cures have been used succesfully for hundreds, if not thousands of years. WAKE UP AMERICA. This is a great film that will prompt much discussion on the subject, and it is beautifully portrayed by two great actors. Also, the musical score soars with the music. Don't miss it!
