Kansas native Etheridge is a heartland rocker in the mold of Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, or Tom Petty, blessed with a powerfully soulful voice that compares favorably to both Janis Joplin and, in her quieter moments, Margo Timmins of the Cowboy Junkies. On this album, Etheridge's songwriting talents are perhaps not quite as consistent as they would soon become, but producer Niko Bolas (Neil Young, Warren Zevon, etc.) gives the album a clean, muscular, and guitar-oriented sound that seems much less dated than many other albums from the period, and with the startlingly passionate "Bring Me Some Water" alone, Etheridge made her first claim as one of the pre-eminent singer/songwriters of her time.

Editorial Reviews
3 stars out of 5 - ...Her ragged, garnet-hued rasp maintains an almost-painful level of intensity throughout...
Uncut (20031101)

4 stars out of 5 - [S]he was blessed with an extraordinary capacity to sing convincingly....Quite rightly, 'Bring Me Some Water' made her an enormous star.

My thoughts of a Wonderful Musician

Created: 24/02/07
I am a huge fan of Melissa Etheridge-I just think her music is awesome. She puts alot of feeling and her own actual experiences in them. That to me is what makes music great. I bought the cd because I have a collection of her cd's. This particular one was stolen from my car in 2004 when someone decided to invade my property and break into my car. I was in HEAVEN when I spotted this cd on ebay. You can not find it in the stores, I've tried. Thanks to an ebayer I have my set of 9 cd's again. Melissa Etheridge is great, I would recommend her music to anyone. Her music is very personal and that to me makes a WONDERFUL MUSICIAN!
